ALGEBRA II SIX-WEEK SUMMER SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE WITH MATH IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN

I. PROBLEM STATEMENT
***** and new requirements in the State of Michigan relating to students who struggle early on their ninth grade Algebra course will immediately endanger ***** track ***** graduation. Beginning in the fall of 2007 all incoming ninth-graders, and ***** younger students following thereafter, will be required to complete four years of mathematics, up and including Algebra II. Prior ***** the 2007-2008 school year, there were no requirements set forth by the ***** ***** ***** and districts set their own graduation requirements. In addition, mathematics teachers are accountable for teaching a broad array of st*****ards. These standards are more stringent than those standards used in the past, and ***** will now be assessed on *****ir knowledge of these standards. In short, students ***** ***** required to take more mathematics classes than previous students, and each of ***** classes is ***** difficult than ***** in prior years. Without s*****port programs such as the one suggested ***** this project, students ***** naturally struggle in ma*****matics could be at a higher risk of fail*****g, and thus being off-track for graduation.

The importance of this study is in the many ***** that will receive support and become enabled ***** graduate regardless of ********** difficulty in mathematics class. The rationale of ***** project ***** seeking, through research, a method th*****t will enable the learning in mathematics for student who experience difficulty in math and that implementation of a six-week summer remedi*****l Algebra II program will enable these students to graduate.

Michigan has the worst rank*****g in ***** Mideast in preparation of ***** for postsecondary education. It is the belief of many educators ***** the sate of Michigan that "innovative teaching methods and alternative methods of reaching students ***** necessary part ***** any effort to improve high school education" in the state of Michigan.
