Effectively Managing Conflict and Negotiating in the Workplace
Conflict occurs when two people desire the same thing—and wish to achieve that objective, quite often, in very different ways. You wish to have a promotion. Your colleague *****s the ***** office. You ***** to leave ***** ***** at six, your boss wishes you to work longer hours. So should ***** simply keep your nose to the grinds*****ne and hope your merit and your desires are recognized? While ignoring office conflicts, and attempting to ***** do one's work may not "l***** you a dagger in the back or a bullet in ***** head," it can be an act of career suicide. (Marshall, 2005) "The ability ***** negotiate and leverage power can make a measurable difference in navigat*****g choppy business waters, achieving positive results ***** advancing ***** career," as ***** must be leveraged and negotiated to resolve conflicts in a positive and managed f*****hion. (Marshall, 2005)
Conflict ***** be mediated and *****, either *****tween the participants or an outside, ***** authority when no *****formal agreement is possible. Negotiation ***** concession is key to managing conflict in a ***** fashion. Negotiation means a comprom*****ed settlement, where one party gives up one aspect of his or her needs or desires in exchange for the other party do*****g similarly. To be a good negoti**********r, one must *****t forget one's own interests nor must one ***** aggressively in a one-sided m*****nner, putting the organization's interests aside to such an extent one *****s a poor impression *****s a team player.
When negotiating a *****place *****, it is a good idea to first consider having an initial discussion about a change in working patterns to see if agreement can be reached informally. Be direct, yet diplomatic with ***** person one is in conflict with. If you ***** a problem with someone, don't express it in personal terms, rather address the issue at hand, such as 'this *****pect of the project needs to be reconsidered.' However, if the conflicts are irreconcilable or *****volve racial, sexual, ***** discriminatory harassment, it may be necessary to make a formal application for a mediator from human resources. ("Negotiating within ***** Workplace," 2004) This may be the best option, to gain a third, objective ear and to prevent the conflict from spiraling out of control. At least, with mediation, effective negotiations can potentially be generated ***** ***** conflict at *****.
