Employment Law: The Ethical Right to Privacy

***** question of employee privacy is a hotly debated one. In the age of internet technology more and more employers are reserving ***** right to read employee's emails. Ethically ***** morally many employee's have protested claiming this is a violation ***** privacy. Is it?

Generally most companies reserve the ***** to monitor employee ***** and internet use during work hours. This is based on the assumpti***** that employees are provided with company owned equipment which should be used for company authorized purposes. Ethically an employer ***** have some jurisdiction over employee work functions during ***** *****. However from a moral *****d ethical standpoint the employer should not have the right to monitor employee communications and activities outside of work hours. Still, if employees are using ***** equipment, one may reasonably expect an employer to 'eavesdrop'.

***** same applied to the use ***** video and surveillance cameras. The key here is informed consent. If employees are going to be *****ed, it is cr*****ical that ***** inform ***** that their activities will be monitored. Monitoring employees without there ***** is not an ***** *****d moral practice.

There are ***** major corporations including Coca Cola corporations that believe that what an employee does on their personal time ***** their business, unless they ***** breaking the law or representing the comp*****y in ***** way (O'Meara, 2000). There are others however that w*****ry incessantly about their reputation and the impact on potential clients/customers. What is tolerated in the workplace as morally and ethically correct must be a result of the collective decisi***** of both ***** and consumers (O'Meara, 2000).
