Abstract

During the mid-20th century, fast food ***** exploded in popularity, and by the turn of the 21st century, there was scarcely an American city ***** any size that did not feature at least one fast food franchise restaurant. While a growing body of research has been devoted to the cultural ***** economic implications ***** these trends, less attention ***** been given to why a potential restaurateur would seek one business form over another. Clearly, the decision to invest in a ***** or try to succeed as an *****dependent restaurateur is directly related to ***** underlying issues involved as ***** whether restaur*****t franchises are harming America's independent restaurants or not. Therefore, this study examines how business failures ***** variously defined in the restaurant industry, what ***** respective recent failure rates are between franchised ***** and their independent counterparts, and what the ***** of ***** findings might be for the restaurant industry today and in the future.
