About Antigua

Antigua is a developing country situated in ***** Eastern Caribbean. It is part of a group ***** *****lands comprising the Organization of ***** East Caribbean States (OECS). These Islands are actually part ***** the Leeward and Windward Isl*****s and sh***** a common currency with a central bank located on ***** Island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean. The population of Antigua is about sixty thousand people. The government of these islands cooperated, first in 1991, with assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and formulated an educational reform document called "Foundations for the Future," which was subsequently approved by ***** various governments. An update to this ***** was presented ***** Miller, Jules and Thomas (2000) the new document is a reform strategy plan intended ***** carry the nations through year 2010. Th***** paper is entitled "Pillars for Partner*****ip ***** Progress" and ***** implementation of the strategy was accepted in December 1991 by the M*****isters of Education of the nine countries.

On the isl***** ***** *****tigua, there are fourteen secondary schools with compulsory school age up to sixteen years. Students complete a primary examination at the grade-six level to enter secondary school. Those who fail this exam have another chance ***** enter secondary school three years l*****er by taking what is called the Post Primary examination, which ***** ***** equivalent of grade 9 (also referred to as senior ***** in elementary schools).

When we examine how ***** have per*****med at the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examinations, ***** is held each year in June, we find ***** they are not performing well in mathematics. The statistics for mathematics from 1991, produced by the Organization of E*****tern Caribbean Reform Unit (OERU), illustrate that Antigua's aver***** of passing students in mathematics is just thirty-two percent. Between ***** and the present the highest percentage of ***** students in the subject ***** mathematics in any year ***** thirty-six percent.
