OF MICE AND MEN
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and discuss three annotations from the book "Of Mice and Men," by John Steinbeck.
THE ANNOTATIONS seen hundreds ***** men come by on the road an' ***** the ranches, with their bindles on ***** back an' that same damn thing in their heads... every damn one of 'em's got a little piece ***** land ***** his head" (Steinbeck, Section 4).
***** ***** and Men" takes place during the Depression in the United States, where in some cities, at least 50 percent of the work force had no work. The hundreds of men in this quotation refer to the men on the move ***** the *****. Many traveled west, hoping to find a better life, jobs in the farm country of California, and perhaps make e*****ugh money to bring ********** families out to join them, and buy land. "Bindles" refer to their belongings, which they tied into a sm*****ll bundle, and then carried it tied to the end of a stick, over ***** shoulder, or on their back.
Against the walls were eight bunks, five of them made up with blankets and the other three showing their burlap ticking" (Steinbeck, ***** 2).
Burlap ticking" refers ***** the c*****ing ***** a mattress. Most mattress covers are a closely woven, softer "*****," or cloth. ***** burl*****p ticking indicated the mattresses are scratchy, and uncomfortable, perhaps made of discarded burlap bags.
Slim's a jerkline skinner" (Steinbeck, Secti***** *****).
A jerkline ***** is someone who drives a set of mules, or is the lead driver for a group of mules.
