New York is a great place to visit or even to live but when a person first encounters it whether for the first time or after a time away, it can be overwhelming. It can look ferocious, cruel and hard, threatening in its enormity and complexity. The sheer magnitude of the built environment gives the impression that the city is a vast mach*****e that has ********** growing, evolving, and adapting over centuries.
