BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Parenting styles have been the focus of extensive research in the field of educational psychology with different ***** of parent*****g stated in f*****dings to have differential effects on the development of a child. B*****umrind had the initial c*****ception and stated four parenting styles and conducted research in relation to the parenting style effect on a child's *****.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is important to make an assessment as to which parenting ***** ***** the most successful and suitable for a child ********** in a specific context.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this rese*****rch is to explore the relationship between parenting styles and child development in order ***** discover ***** children are developing more *****ly and which p*****nting style ********** are subject to.

ST*****EMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The major problem in this specific area ***** research in ***** psychology is that ********** have ********** almost entirely on adolescents ***** children who have become almost independent in the exploration of their achievement on academic levels. Because the first six (6) years of a ***** life forever determ*****e much of the child's pers*****ality, beliefs, principles and goals it ***** cr*****ically important to look at the various parenting ***** and ultimately the environment in which the ***** are being reared. The primary challenge in this research proposal is concerning the conceptual basis ***** parenting styles, ***** has always presented a problem in regards to research in this ***** of study.

The proposed methodology of this study is that ***** a qu*****litative method of ***** through review of available peer-reviewed literature in this field of study.

LITERATURE REVIEW

***** Style' is defined as "a complex activity ***** includes many specific behaviors that work individually and together to influence child outcomes."

***** construct ***** parenting style, based on Baumrind's c*****cept of parenting style, is used ***** "capture normal variations in parent's attempts to control and socialize ***** *****ren (Baumrind, 1991) According to the work of Mccoby & Martin, 1983 "Parenting style captures two primary elements of ***** which are those *****: (1) parental responsiveness; and (2) parental demandingness. Responsiveness being parental supportiveness ***** speaks of "the extent ***** which parents intentionally foster individuality, self-regulation and self-assertion by being attuned, supportive, and acquiescent to children's special needs and demands" (Baumrind, *****, p.62) Parental 'demandingness referring to "the claims parents make on children to become integrated into the family whole, by their maturity demands, superv*****ion, disciplinary efforts and willingness to confront the child who disobeys" (Baumrind, 1991, pp. 61-62; as cited by Darling (1999).

In the Parenting Styles online magazine publication, it is ***** "Psychologist John Gottman, ***** identified four basic parenting ***** in his research on families ***** ***** emotional climate of the home."
