A QUOTE EXERCISE

This paper will introduce several quotes from an article, quoting them in the proper format, and include a bibliographic entry for the article "Jackson's The Lottery," by Amy A. Griffin short quotation ***** the article reads, "***** good harvest has always been vital to civilizations" (Griffin 44).

Here is a ***** quotation with some words omitted from the sentence. "Many ancient cultures believed that growing crops represented the life cycle, beginning *****...the end-death" (44).

Th***** quote omits a ***** ***** within the quoted material, and introduces a long quotation of more than four lines.

Old Man Warner, the only one who seems to recall the seriousness of the occasion, complains that Mr. Summers jokes with everybody (77). But why do the villagers cling to tradition when they no longer find meaning in the ritual?... Because there has "***** been a lottery" (Jackson *****), the villagers feel compelled to continue this horrifying tradition (Griffin 44).

***** is an example of paraphrasing. When people first read the story in the "New Yorker Magazine," it frightened them. Some ***** them thought Jackson had gone too far in showing modern people participating in such a gruesome ritual. She said she was try*****g to show how ***** can be so heartless to each other, and do things as a mob ***** they would never do alone (44).

In addition, here is an example of paraphrasing with ***** embedded quote. Once, long ago in the history of ***** village, the people understood the importance of the ***** and its *****. However, as the older ***** died or left ***** village, people began to "take the ritual lightly" (***** 44), and ***** elders had more trouble getting ***** to participate solemnly, some ***** ***** even joke during the lottery (*****). This story is disturbing and very dark - it is easy to see ***** people ***** read it were upset. ***** mental*****y of a mob ***** ***** scary thing, and I'm very glad such a system is viewed as grue***** by people *****day.

*****, ***** is a quote ***** a quote. "According to Carl Jung, archetypes can be considered 'complexes of experience that come upon us like fate' (30), a p*****st collective experience represented in rituals, symbols, and motifs" (Griffin 44).
