Sports Illustrated Article, "The Indian Wars"
This is a paper that gives a personal reflection on the Sports Illustrated article "***** Indian *****" (Price, 2002). There ***** *****e source used.
One of the things facing the nation today is being "politically correct." The sporting community is not exempt from the controversy.
***** are Native American Advocates who feel using names such as "Redskins," Braves, Chiefs and Indians defame ***** Native American population. However, when a survey w***** conducted with ***** Americans who lived both on ***** off reservations, the majority had no problem with the ***** (Price, 2002).
There has been pressure applied to the government, schools and professional teams ***** discontinue using names and words that are seen as defamatory to Native Americans. "Since 1969, more than 600 schools and minor league pro teams have dropped nick***** deemed offensive by Native American groups (Price, 2002)."
It seems that one way the advocates are trying to pressure teams in to changing their names is through the wallet. The Washing*****n Redskins lost ***** 7 trademarks on ***** name and stand to lose $5 million a year if they lose the appeal. However, it is being suggested that ***** they change their name, then the m*****y will roll in.
Although advocates look at terms like "Redskin" as an insult dating back ***** a time ***** traders offered rewards for Indi***** scalps, the Washington ***** look at it as meaning "courage, dignity and leadership (Price, *****)."
***** controversy is far from ***** over. If the ***** ***** can not agree to ***** use of the terms, ***** how can non-Native Team owners ***** School Boards decide on whe*****r ***** change their names or leave them ***** they *****.
