The Theme of Love in D. H. Lawrence's "The Horse *****ealer's Daughter"

The short story by D. H. Lawrence entitled, "The ***** Dealer's Daughter" talks about the sudden love that both Mabel Pervin and Dr Jack Fergusson had experienced when he accidentally saved ***** from the suicide she intends to do. Aside from the *****me of love, one ***** the main issues that will be discussed in relation to ***** theme of love is the importance of both protagonists' (Mabel and *****) role in their small community, and how the roles that *****y have affects their own conception of real love.

***** Perv***** is illustrated in the story as a very quiet and reserved woman, talking and saying nothing to her brothers at the start of the *****. It is evident ***** there ***** no bond between the ***** and ***** sister Mabel, who, after several attempts from her brothers' part ***** talk to her, remain motionless ***** uncommunicative, answering their questions with curt replies, sometimes, not even answering at all. The unfavorable ********** between the brothers and Mabel is reflected through *****enry's (Mabel's brother) description ***** Mabel to Jack: "***** sulkiest ***** th***** ever trod!" Un*****tunately, her circle of friends became smaller as her father passed away, and Mabel was left with no one to confide in ***** except for the intimate and 'close' relationship that she maintains with her mo*****r, through her mot*****'s grave at the back ***** ***** church in their community. The act of cleaning her grave is symbolic ***** the devotion that she has for her mother, and th***** reflects her loneliness for being a woman wi***** ***** on to be *****th, and no one to take care of her. Prior to her attempted suicide, the character ***** ***** Pervin can ***** illustrated as a l*****ly, silently frustr*****ted woman, who craves ***** the love of an individual who ***** see ***** as worthy of loving, or just to be *****n care of. Meanwhile, Dr Jack Pervin can be described as a doctor in ***** strictest sense, ********** this was ***** when he recalled how Mabel's body looked like ***** he undressed her. His *****ability to recall Mabel's naked body tells us of the strict patient- doc*****r ***** that Jack maintains even to a close f*****mily friend like Mabel. In essence, ***** is a man who is somewhat contented with life as a country doctor, and he does not display sophistication in his manners or ways. Just ***** Mabel, Jack Fergusson is a man who h***** a need for love; only, *****e ***** not able to confront th***** fact until Mabel confronted him ***** that fact.

It ***** be said that because of ***** longing for love, ***** *****'s unfamiliarity with the
