Miles Teves is arguably one of the creative geniuses of our time. He was born in 1963 in Salinas, California, and is probably best known for his work on King Kong (2005), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and Total Recall (1990) (IMDb, N.d.). His work is expansive and can be seen (and witnessed) through a variety of different forms that are presented through different mediums. Most of his work was devoted to conceptual design in different modes that include sculptures, television production, films, role-playing games, computer games, and movies. His work covers many different contemporary themes and can inspire new generations to appreciate art on a level that some historical art cannot provide to many individuals.

Education & Career History

Miles Teves attended North Salinas High, in California before entering college and after spending his childhood in Salinas. A short biography is available on his website that describes Salinas as:

"Once upon a time, on the verdant central coast of mythical California, in a small city called Salinas, plagued by dime store Cowboys, disgruntled Cholos and fields of lettuce, an artist was born. The very same Salinas fled by John Steinbeck just as soon as he was able. It was 1963, and it would be another eighteen years before Miles could leave this idyllic and nurturing cultural paradise, so he quickly got down to the business of growing up (Teves, Biography, N.d.)."

His biography gives several personal examples of his love for contemporary mediums as well as European Art and personally "liked to paint naked people" (Teves, Biography, N.d.).

After high school, Teves moved to Los Angles which he humorously describes as:

"In 1983, after having served the bulk of his sentence, he was released for good behavior (from high school) and promptly moved to Los Angeles. Hot, sprawling, creative, energetic, fascinating, eternally sunny Los Angeles. Not knowing any better, he took all of his parent's limited resources and attended 'Art Center College of Design' in smoggy Pasadena enrolled as an Illustration major. A year later the money ran out. Art Center is very, very expensive (Teves, Biography, N.d.)."

Miles Teves attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena between 1983-1984, but was hired directly out of college before graduating (Teves, N.d.) His LinkedIn profile further states that he:

Attended Art Center for 1 year before being hired in my field of choice as a Concept Designer/Illustrator

Activities and Societies: Illustration, Concept Design, Sculpture, Special Effects

His biography describes his experience being hired as:

"In a stroke of fate Rob Bottin hired the young artist to work as a concept illustrator on a landmark fantasy film called 'Legend'. Getting paid to draw 12 hours a day can improve ones skills at an alarming rate. Miles never went back to Art Center. He continued to work with Mr. Bottin on several more movies before he finally wised up to the fact that he was being used. To this day he still has nothing to show for all the films he worked on in this period, except his own good word (Teves, Biography, N.d.)."

After this experience, he returned to school once more for a semester but again left school for a job. Eventually, he made it back to Los Angeles and began to make a name for himself as a freelancer and build his reputation in the field. This spring boarded his career and he was able to work on many projects in the movie industry beginning in 1984, and continuing until now. His resume gives a comprehensive account of these projects which include a number of projects that will be listed in the appendix.

Selected Works

Iron Man

Figure 2 - Teves Iron Man Clay Sculpture (Teves, IronMan Workplace, 2008)

Contemporary art, especially those related to the movie industry, have to use a variety of different techniques in the creative process. For example, Iron Man first began with a conceptual drawing, that was meticulously turned into a clay sculpture to build a 3D image, scanned with the latest 3D imaging technologies, and then eventually turned into the costume that was worn by the character in the movie. Beyond the simply the costume, the design was also used to create the digital images that served as the basis for all the special effects that were used in the movie. Iron Man represents a mix of a cyborg-looking robotic form, with a human profile, that represents a mix of technology with humanity. The design makes one wonder what the capabilities of technology will be in relation to improving human performances in the upcoming generations.

Crystal Skulls

Figure 3 - Crystal Skeletons Sizing Graphic (Teves, Indy Crystal Skeletons, 2008)

Teves designed the skeletons that awoke with the crystal skulls in the latest Indiana Jones movie. These skeletons are undoubtedly alien in form and it is reasonable to suspect that they once served as the core of some alien life form. However, these skeletons are reanimated through some mystical force once Indiana Jones collects all of the crystal skulls needed to bring them back to life. The skeletons are much larger than the typical human as shown in the design sketches, however to determine exactly how much larger they should be, took some creative planning. This is shown in the sketches as the silhouette of Indy is contrasted with different sizes of skeletons. The design at this stage takes on something of a comic book form. However, these figures will be eventually become more refined as they become the lifelike models that are used in the film.

Mermaid Underwater

Figure 4 - Teves Mermaid Sketch (Teves, Mermaid Underwater, 2011)

This is my personal favorite example of Teves work. It shows his breadth as an artist in my opinion and the underwater mermaid collection. The use of colors and contrast makes the image aesthetically pleasing as well as fits the surrealist theme that one might expect to find when portraying a mythological being. Furthermore, there is more detail in this work than is found in other concept developments by Teves. Similar to other examples in the artist's collection, this image was eventually further refined into more lifelike characters to be used in film. The mermaid collection in general was used as inspiration for the characters in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
