Book Report Outline

Students in all grade levels will have to write book reports from time to time as part of their normal academic assignments. In order to write an effective and well-written book report, students should begin by writing a book report outline. However, in order to write a well-formatted book report outline, students should first understand the purpose of the book report.

Many students believe that a book report is a writing assignment for lower level English classes. For example, they may have had to write book reports for a middle school class in order to prove to a teacher that they actually read a book. However, students in all courses and at all grade levels may have to write a book report for a variety of reasons.

One of the reasons that many professors assign book reports is so that they can require their students to read a particular work. By having to write a book report, students will not only focus on the work that they need to read, but they will also process the information in a meaningful manner, which will help to ensure that they understand the book they have had to read. Some professors also require students to write book reports simply to prove to the professors that they actually read the book that they were assigned.

Regardless of the reason for the book report assignment, students tend to get better grades and to write more effective book reports if they begin the process with a book report outline. Book report outlines basically provide the road map that helps students to develop their drafts of the book reports.

In order to write an effective book report outline, students should read the book that they have been assigned. They should also take notes as they read about important themes and ideas that they want to discuss in the book report. When they develop the book report outline, they should refer to these notes.

Book report outlines should contain clear sections, including the introduction, body, and conclusion. These sections should each have a small amount of information in them in the book report outlines so that students can remember which points they want to include where in the actual book report.

Even when book report outlines are very comprehensive and contain detailed information that the student wants to include in the book report, a book report outline is not the same thing as the first draft of a book report. Only after a student has complete his or her book report outline should he or she begin the first draft of the book report.
