Essay Subject
The primary topic of an essay is known as the essay subject. Because essays are written in every discipline on just about every aspect of that discipline, there is a huge array of existing essay subjects, and an even wider array of possible essay subjects. Sometimes, having such a broad spectrum from which to choose can be overwhelming. Therefore, it is helpful if students learn some techniques that can help them determine their own, original essay subjects.
First, a student should carefully read over her essay prompt. Even essay assignments that don't list specific questions typically ask students to focus on a general area within the course subject. It is very important for students to be familiar with the exact directions and requirements listed on the prompt, as most teachers deduct points from an essay that has not followed the prompt.
Once the student is exactly clear on what it is she must do in the essay, she can begin to brainstorm about possible essay subjects. Sometimes, the best way to do this is to make a list of the major topics the course has covered thus far and then consider which topics from the list are most interesting. Essays are always better when their writers are genuinely interested in their content; therefore, students should try to select an essay subject that they truly want to know more about.
When the student has selected one or two major topics that interest her, she should make a new, more extensive list for each topic that lists the subtopics of that area. This may require the student to look back through her notes or textbook, as the student may have forgotten the subtopics of the area. Once the list has been generated, the student should again select the topic or group of topics that she finds most interesting.
From the selected subtopic or subtopics, the student should generate a new list of subtopics of the subtopic, again referencing her notes or textbook if necessary. It is from this list that the student will select an essay subject. It is important to go through all of these three phases, because an essay subject must be very specific, and a subtopic of a major topic will often be too general on which to write an essay.
Once the student has determined the essay subject, the student then decides on a thesis, or main point, about that subject. The essay subject should not be confused with the thesis. The subject of the essay is the topic of the essay—what the essay is about. The thesis of the essay is the writer's point about that topic. These two should not be mistaken for each other.
