How to Write a Good Research Paper

The best way to learn how to write a good research paper is to practice the skills related to academic paper writing (see below). A research paper is a popular assignment in college courses, and often one that counts for a significant portion of student grades. Research papers are assigned so that students can (1) become familiar with scholarly research—a central skill for college success and, often, career success, as well; (2) gain expert knowledge on a particular subject related to the course; and (3) learn how to synthesize and report on secondary research in such a way as to make it available to others. There are many skills necessary to successfully accomplish these three goals; thus, even students who know how to write a research paper may find themselves wondering how to write a good research paper—how to transform a C paper into a B paper or a B paper into an A.

  1. Read research texts. Students often overlook the importance of being familiar with the genre in which they are supposed to write. This is the equivalent of attempting to draw a cartoon without ever having seen one. One of the best and most important ways to learn how to write a good research paper is by reading a variety of research-based texts. This will help students become aware of the tone, style, language, and organization commonly used in research papers.
  2. Research thoroughly. Some students believe that the research for a research paper can be done exclusively on the internet. This is not the case. Most sources on the internet will not be appropriate for a college-level research paper. The majority of scholarly materials are not available on the internet, but must be accessed through libraries. In order to truly fulfill the research paper assignment, a student will have to browse through a variety of academic materials found in or through a university library.
  3. Organize wisely. One of the most noticeable differences between a good and a mediocre research paper is sound organization. The paper should guide the reader through the subject in such a way that each concept or idea introduced builds on what has come before in a logical, gradual, and natural progression. When learning how to write good research papers, students will find it helpful to create research paper outlines before beginning the drafting process, as this will assist the student in organizational planning.
  4. Be discriminating. One of the most important lessons to acquire when learning how to write a good research paper is how to determine which quotes, paraphrases, and pieces of information to include and which to leave out. A general guideline is as follows: only quote when (1) the way the writer put the words cannot be changed without changing the meaning of the passage, or (2) when what the writer said is exceptionally important or insightful—important or insightful enough to make the words worth repeating. Paraphrasing should be used liberally, but must always be properly cited. Information does little to contribute to the understanding of the topic of the paper should be omitted.

The differences between a mediocre research paper and a good one are marked by how well a student executes these skills. Mediocre research papers are unclear and wandering. Good research papers are focused and direct. Mediocre research papers do not engage the reader; good research papers make the reader care about the subject matter. Mediocre research papers are poorly cited and stylistically weak; good research papers are properly documented and stylistically polished. In essence, the difference between a mediocre and a good research paper is can be linked to how fastidious a student is about analyzing, engaging, and revising. Most students can learn how to write good research papers; it just takes effort and time—a lot of effort and a lot of time.
