How to Write a Student Term Paper

Many students new to college will find themselves faced with the task of learning how to write a term paper. It is common for students to be baffled by this process, as most students learn how to write term papers by doing them rather than by being instructed on a specific term paper writing method. A term paper is written as the culminating assignment of an academic term of study. It is therefore intended to be a comprehensive document revealing a student’s knowledge in a particular subject. To this end, a term paper should be completed in stages throughout the term. Learning how to write a term paper is different from learning how to write other texts because it involves learning many different skills: time management, research approaches, and academic presentation.

One of the most important components of how to write a term paper is planning. A term paper is long and requires a significant time investment. Therefore, students should create a schedule for themselves so that they can ensure that every step of the term paper is allotted enough time and energy. This means that as soon as a student receives his assignment, he should determine personal deadlines for when to select a topic, when to create a thesis, when to complete the research, when to submit the first draft, and when to complete the final draft. This process in its entirety will take several weeks of diligent focus. Students should therefore complete these tasks over a generous span of time.

The first actual step in learning how to write a term paper is determining a good term paper topic. The topic should be a clear and specific aspect of the subject of the course that the student finds particularly interesting. For instance, if the class is a nursing class, the topic should be a nursing-related issue that the student finds compelling—for instance, pediatric nursing. Once a general topic has been selected, the student must narrow the topic to be very specific—such as communicating with autistic patients.

One of the most challenging aspects of learning how to write term papers is completing the next step: writing the thesis statement. A thesis is an argument or main point that presents the writer’s stance or opinion on the topic. For instance, in the paper on communicating with autistic patients in pediatric nursing, a thesis might assert that “In order to effectively communicate with autistic patients, pediatric nurses must be trained in communication styles that have been proven to be successful with autistic children.” This is a very specific idea, and asserts an argument that the student would then need to defend with examples and research.

The research component of a term paper will likely be the most time consuming aspect of the term paper process, and can also be one of the most difficult aspects of learning how to write term papers. This process requires the student to invest significant time in the university library. When first learning how to write term papers, it is best for students to begin their research by consulting a reference librarian. Reference librarians can show students where to begin their research and how to assess the quality and relevance of the sources they discover.

Once the thesis has been written and the research has been done, the writing of the term paper is fairly straightforward. However, students still need to focus so that they write their term papers with the proper structure and tone. The paper should present the writer’s thesis in the first ¼ of the text. After that, every paragraph should clearly relate to that thesis, and should use the student’s research to support his or her claims. The paper should conclude by suggesting insight on the thesis that has been gained through the arguments presented in the paper.
