How to Write Term Paper

College professors direct students to write term paper projects as a popular undergraduate and graduate assignment, which causes much trepidation among pupils.  This is largely due to the fact that most students are not taught how to write reports, since most students are taught how to write in high school, wherein the popular writing format is the document.  Though a term paper can seem to be a daunting task, learners should be heartened by knowing that many of the skills they already use for writing essays can be translated into the composition of term papers.  The primary difference between a report and a report is that a report is much longer, more complex, and includes far more research.  Students can make the burden of a report seem less heavy by breaking the assignment down into smaller tasks and skills, such as learning how to make term paper schedules, how to write term paper theses, and how to write term paper outlines.

A term paper is long and requires considerable time to complete.  Therefore, learners should create a schedule for themselves so that they can stay on track and be sure that they devote enough time to each component.  This requires determining deadlines for each phase of the writing process, such as selecting a topic, writing an argument, performing research, composing an initial draft, editing the draft, and completing the final draft.  

Learning how to write term paper theses is an invaluable skill, as a student will need to write dozens of term paper theses in the course of his studies.  A thesis is an argument or main point that presents the writer's stance or opinion on the topic.  The term paper thesis should always suggest how the topic fits in to the larger context of the field of study for which it is written.  

Often, the most difficult aspect of how to author reports is performing the research for the document.  Research for a long text such as a term paper requires time and dedication; it also frequently elicits a fair amount of frustration.  This is usually because students are unfamiliar with how to efficiently locate and assess secondary sources.  Therefore, learners can benefit greatly from enlisting the assistance of a university reference librarian.  

Next, the student should invest some time in learning how to write term paper outlines.  First, the student should determine the main points or pieces of information she wants the report to explore.  These main points will be the primary sections.  Within each section, the outline should list the points that need to be covered in order to fully explain and analyze the topic of that section.  In each of these sections, the student should determine where research can or should be inserted, and make a note of which studies should be included.  

Students learning how to author reports will quickly see that the process of writing a report is markedly similar to the process of writing an essay: the keys to success are in the preparation.  Once a student has written the thesis, done the research, and composed the outline, the writing of the report will be much easier, since all of the main components of the report have been complete.
