Master's Thesis
A master's thesis is an in-depth, original research document prepared by a student in the final phase of her master's study. Master's theses can be thought of as the master's equivalent of a doctoral dissertation. The primary difference between a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertational is length and depth. Because a doctoral dissertation is written for a higher degree and is accorded a much longer working time, doctoral dissertations are expected to be more advanced than master's theses. However, the point of both documents is the same—to demonstrate the student's advanced study in his or her field and ability to contribute original knowledge to that field. In some institutions, a doctoral dissertation is known as a doctoral thesis. Students should take care not to confuse a doctoral thesis with a master's thesis.
Master's theses are typically written over the period of one academic year. Students usually determine a general thesis topic in the second semester of their master's study, and begin contemplating a specific topic under the advisement of professors in their respective departments. Often, students select topics in areas in which they are interested in doing doctoral study, as it is not uncommon for students to submit a master's thesis as part of their application to a doctoral program.
Once a definite topic has been chosen, the student gathers a thesis committee from advanced professors in the student's department and institution. It is common for most master's thesis committees to consist of two professors in the student's department who specialize in the area in which he or she is writing, and one committee member from an external department. Among the committee members will be one professor the student selects to be the primary advisor of the project. This advisor will work closely with the student for the duration of his or her thesis writing.
Unlike doctoral dissertations, which are often composed after a student has completed his or her coursework, a master's thesis is usually written while a student is still taking courses. Therefore, time management can be one of the most difficult aspects of the master's thesis process, as the research and composition for the thesis must occur in addition to the student's other work. It is therefore important for students to set guidelines in collaboration with their advisors in order to complete the thesis in the desired timeframe.
The first milestone of a master's thesis is the submission and approval of the thesis proposal. This document outlines the student's planned project and cites research supporting the validity of his or her approach. This document is submitted to the student's department for approval before the thesis writing can begin.
Once approved, the student must work diligently to compose an original document that demonstrates the student's graduate-level mastery of both her field and thesis topic. The required length of a master's thesis will vary between institutions and departments, but all master's theses will be long texts that include significant external research and innovative thought. The student should complete the thesis in phases, and each phase should be reviewed by the thesis advisor for feedback.
Once the thesis is complete, the student must have a thesis defense—a formal gathering of the student's committee and other department members wherein the student responds to critical commentary regarding his or her text.
