MIT Thesis
An MIT thesis is a long, original, research-based document composed by an undergraduate senior or second-year master's student studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a distinguished university located in Boston, Massachusetts. MIT theses composed by undergraduates are known as senior theses; MIT theses composed by master's students are known as master's theses. The length and complexity of an MIT thesis will be considerably more advanced at the master's level.
A thesis is composed by a student in the final year or semester of his or her degree and is considered to be the culminating project of that degree. The thesis is assigned so that the student can demonstrate his or her advanced knowledge in the area of his or her degree or major. Theses must undergo scrutiny and approval by a student's department before the student is allowed to take his or her degree. An MIT thesis is different from a thesis written by a student at another university only in that the MIT thesis is expected to be on par with the level of scholarship and skill typically expected from a student who was accepted to and studied at MIT. MIT is a very competitive institution; therefore, MIT theses must demonstrate an exceptional level of knowledge and innovation.
To begin the process of researching and writing an MIT thesis, students should form a thesis committee from trusted and revered professors. The committee is intended to be the student's source of academic support and guidance throughout the thesis process, and is typically instrumental in assisting the student to complete the project successfully. The student should determine his or her exact thesis topic in consult with the committee so that the student has the endorsement of the committee and also its advice about how to proceed with the project. Once a topic has been selected, the student must perform extensive research into his or her topic to become an expert on the topic and to determine how he or she will advance the topic by contributing a new theory, application, or practice to the realm of its study. This is often a very challenging aspect of the thesis process, but also the most important, as a thesis is intended to demonstrate a student's ability to add new contributions to his or her field. For some disciplines, this will require the student to perform a research study to test his or her theories, applications, or practices.
The thesis should be written in several phases, and each phase should produce a draft that is reviewed by the thesis committee. The student should always take the advice of the committee under advisement and make changes to the draft accordingly before presenting the next draft. Once the draft has been completed, the student should then enlist the assistance of MIT writing centers and professionals to assist them in ensuring that the style, grammar, and citations of the thesis are flawless.
