Parts of a Term Paper

In order to write effective term papers, students should make an effort to understand the separate parts of a term paper. Every student will need to write many term papers before he or she completes his or her academic career. A term paper is a formal academic document that requires students to research a topic in depth and report on their findings. Students may have to write term papers for any grade level on any topic.

As with any academic writing assignment, there are many parts of a term paper that are unique and have a separate purpose. Each part of a term paper should be distinct from one another. For example, the introduction will be very different than the conclusion. By breaking a term paper format down, students will be able to analyze each part of a term paper so that they can effectively write separate sections that meet the needs of each section.

The first part of a term paper is the cover page. Each term paper must have a cover page, even if it is not explicitly assigned by a professor. The cover page introduces the title and author of the term paper. Students should be aware that all parts of a term paper should be written in the same style, such as APA or MLA - including the cover page.

The second part of a term paper is the introduction, which is the first paragraph of the term paper. In the introduction, students should briefly explain the background and importance of the term paper topic. This is also the section where students state their thesis, which should be located in the first or last section of the introduction.

Next comes the body of the term paper. The body of the term paper should contain separate paragraphs that each has new information that supports the thesis. This is the part of the term paper that builds the student's case and explains his or her research findings.

Finally, one of the most important parts of a term paper is the conclusions, which is located at the end of the term paper. In the conclusion, students state their findings.

While there are many parts of a term paper, students need to be aware that the parts of a term paper are different than the parts of other types of writings. Many academic writings follow the same format. However, the content contained within each part of a term paper should always be objective and based on research. Other papers, such as an essay, may be subjective and based on opinion. Therefore, while the format may be the same for many types of assignments, the content within each part should be different.
