When writing for a peer reviewed journal, your goal is to get your essay published so it can be shared with other professionals in the field.  Since the writing will be reviewed by a group of your peers, however, you must be certain that the completed essay is something that the small review board will find relevant and important to the field.

Many peer reviewed journals will ask that you write an abstract to go along with the actual journal writing.  The abstract provides a brief synopsis of what the entire writing is to discuss and should only be about a paragraph in length.  

The actual journal writing itself is often broken down into a few different segments, with each segment focusing on one aspect of the overall writing.  Similarly, it should be written in a purely factual manner as it presents information to the reader.  Finally, since the writing is intended for an audience of other professionals in the field, you do not have to explain every last detail of terms or theories that are well understood and known in the field.

Regardless of the method you use for organizing your paper, arrangement of the article is critical when it comes to journal writing.  This is partially because the typical, academic journal writing is divided into sections and, as such, you need to make sure the right information is contained within each section.  Often times, a journal writing has multiple contributors.  If this is the case, you need to work with each person that is contributing to the writing in order to make sure all of the desired points are made.

After determining the information you wish to include in your journal writing, you also need to consider the audience of your paper.  In most cases, the audience of a journal writing will be your professional peers.  Therefore, you should write the journal as though you are speaking to another professional working in your field or is if you are writing to a student who is learning about the field.  As such, you should assume that the audience has at least a basic working knowledge of the subject area and you do not need to explain every last detail.

With journal writing, the final draft should be clear and concise.  Review the writing for grammatical errors, punctuation errors, and flaws in logic.  Once you have done so, you should have a great journal writing to submit for peer review.
