Research Paper Assignment

When a student begins a research paper assignment, it is important for him or her to have the end product in mind throughout each step of the process.  A research paper assignment is an assignment in which students must research a particular subject in-depth and then write a paper on their findings.  In most cases, a professor will wish to see that a student has not only researched a topic thoroughly, but that the student has also thought critically about the topic.

The first step students should take when beginning their document assignments is to select a topic.  In some cases, learners will have to perform research on a topic that a teacher has assigned.  In other cases, learners can choose their own article assignment topics.  Prior to beginning research, students need to have an accurate understanding of the topic and of how they will approach their research.

As students develop a plan for researching their topic, they need to make sure that they also completely understand the requirements of the report assignment.  Should the student provide opinions in the report?  How long will the assignment need to be, according to the professor?  Should the student research a topic in a particular light or with a particular goal in mind, such as in a comparison paper?  All of these questions will help learners to make sure that they understand research paper assignments before researching a topic so that they can be sure to research the right things.

After a student feels comfortable that he or she has researched a topic completely, the student should create an outline for the document.  The outline should provide a structure that flows well from idea to idea and includes all of the important information that a student wishes to share.  A research paper assignment can be lengthy, so having an outline can help students stay on track.

Finally, the structure of the project itself should have three main parts: introduction, body, and conclusion.  The introduction should include background information for the research as well as a thesis.  A thesis is a statement that the learner will prove to be true.  The body of the document should have separate paragraphs that support the thesis with new information in each paragraph.  Finally, the conclusion should tie together all of the ideas that the student expressed in the body.

Research paper assignments are similar to essay assignments.  Both are academic works that students create in order to share information and ideas.  However, a research paper assignment always requires an in-depth amount of data collection.  An essay sometimes requires an in-depth amount of research, but not always.  Research papers provide facts and information and often draw conclusions based on the information a student learned during research.  Reports may provide facts and information, but they often also provide commentary and a point-of-view, making them more subjective than research paper assignments.
