Research Paper Outline

When it comes time to create a research paper, the best way to start is by creating a research paper outline. A research paper outline is a basic road map that outlines how a research paper will be structured, how it will flow, and what content will be included in a research paper. Research paper outlines are easy to create, as well.

Research paper outlines are important because they not only help students to develop their research paper format and content, but they are also easy to review and edit. When a student creates an outline, the student can easily change around ideas and information in order to help the research paper flow well. Editing research paper outlines is far easier and less time consuming than editing an entire paper.

Another benefit of using research paper outlines is that they help students to create the papers faster. When a student can approach the research paper one paragraph or section at a time, the student will be able to focus better on the topic at hand. Plus, because the student has a research paper outline, the student will know exactly what he or she will include next in the paper and will not have to worry about forgetting what content he or she wishes to include and where.

There are two basic types of research paper outlines. The first kind is a detailed outline, which will actually include full sentences for each header as well as the introduction and conclusion paragraphs. A detailed outline is basically a more thorough version of the second kind of outline: a skeleton outline.

A skeleton outline uses keywords and phrases in order to structure the outline. The content can be the same for both a detailed and a skeleton outline, but the major difference is the amount of content (or words) that a student will use to describe what parts of the essay will go where.

A research paper outline is the same as an outline for other types of academic writing in many ways. All types of outlines help students to structure their papers well and make editing the paper easy. Outlining a paper is a very basic first step in the writing process.

However, research paper outlines are distinct because they will describe the flow and format of a research paper. The flow of a research paper is different than the flow and format of all other types of papers, including essays. Therefore, students should make sure that they are aware of the flow and formatting requirements of writing a research paper when they attempt to create their research paper outlines.
