Research Term Paper
Many college courses will require students to complete a term paper as a culminating course project. These texts are typically long and in-depth papers in which a student investigates and explores a single topic related to the course’s topic of study. Often, these term papers will be research term papers, meaning their primary objective is to present a variety of scholarly opinion about a certain topic. A research term paper is different from other types of term papers because it requires the student to be a discoverer and interpreter of ideas rather than a generator of ideas. In some term papers, students are asked to provide their own, original notions about their term paper topics; in research term papers, students are supposed to present and analyze notions posited by others.
Research term papers are intended to place significant research demands on students. Students should therefore anticipate that the research element of the research term paper will be the most time-consuming, and perhaps the most difficult. Effective research requires a student to find and study the major sources of information in the particular field in which he or she is writing. These sources may be suggested to the student by his or her instructor, but it is more likely that the student will need to discover these sources on her own. A research librarian is an excellent resource for this discovery process. Research librarians can often suggest where students should best begin their search for information. In almost every case, this search will focus on library resources and online databases rather than the internet. There are many valuable online sources, but they typically must be accessed through a library database. The internet is often not a valid resource unless the site has been peer-reviewed or is published by an authoritative academic or official source.
When the research is complete, it may be helpful for the student to compose an outline of the research term paper in order to organize the information he or she has found. This does not need to be a detailed document, but merely a rough sketch of the order in which the information is going to be presented. All sources that refer to the same subject or make a similar point, for instance, should be grouped together. Furthermore, the writer should organize the entire paper so that it progresses from general ideas to specific ones.
When writing the research term paper, students should follow the outline and balance their reports of the research with analysis. In general, each section of a paper should include more analysis than reporting so that the paper primarily presents the student’s interpretation of the sources rather than a summary of the sources.
Research term papers must be carefully and accurately documented. Students should take care when writing that all of their sources are cited in the text and listed in a references or works cited page.
