Senior Research Paper

A senior research paper is a common academic writing requirement for seniors in high school.  Senior research papers require learners to commit a great deal of time towards studying one particular subject and writing a project based on their studies.  Therefore, senior research papers are often the largest projects that students have to work on before they go to college.

Many students are given the opportunity to select their own preferred topics for their senior research papers.  When a student can select his or her own topic, the student usually is able to study a topic that interests him or her in depth, which might also help the student to determine what he or she will major in while in college.  Therefore, many learners get a huge benefit from the opportunity to research and write senior research papers.

Students will be paired with advisers in order to ensure that the students stay on track with their senior research papers.  The students will check in with their advisers to tell them about their progress during the writing and research for the document.  Advisers may also provide direction for students that need help finding a topic or purpose for the document.

When students go about writing the senior research paper, they should begin with an outline.  The outline will help the students to organize a large amount of information that they have been studying throughout a year or semester.  Students can also change the outline more easily than they can change a paper once the writing as begun.

The first section of a senior report should explain the reason for the research and give background information about the topic of the research.  The introductory paragraph should also contain a thesis statement, which is a one-sentence statement that basically provides a reason for the document.  Every paragraph of the report will prove the thesis to be correct.

The body of the document will contain many paragraphs.  Each paragraph should contain unique information or ideas that support the thesis.  These paragraphs and ideas will be tied together in the conclusion.  The conclusion of the senior research paper falls in the last paragraph and literally provides the student's conclusion to the ideas that he or she expressed.

A senior research paper is different than a report, though some students can be confused by the two.  Both academic documents help learners to share information about which they have spent a long time studying.  However, a university report is an academic work that usually segues into a career for a student who is pursuing a PhD.  Many academic articles take years to create.  A senior research paper can be an equally as important paper for a student, but it generally does not dictate a career and usually takes less than a semester or year to create.
