Statistics Dissertation

A statistics dissertation is a long research document composed as the culminating project for an advanced degree in statistics. Most frequently, statistics dissertations are written to fulfill the requirements for a Ph.D. in statistics. The objective of any dissertation is to contribute new and significant knowledge to the field in which the dissertation is being composed; in order to add new insight to the field of statistics, statistics dissertations must be complex and innovative so that they are not replicating work presented in existing scholarship. This is what distinguishes a statistics dissertation from the statistics projects and papers a student may have composed throughout his or her coursework: statistics dissertations must be original, which means they must develop a new theory, practice, or methodology rather than simply demonstrate the use of an existing theory, practice, or methodology.

Statistics is a large field, so students have a plethora of areas within the discipline they could choose to pursue. However, students are typically encouraged to write their dissertations in the sub-area of the discipline that they wish to pursue in their careers. This is because a dissertation requires so much study, practice, and knowledge that by the time the student has completed it, he or she is considered something of an expert in the field. It is therefore common for students to obtain careers or teaching positions related to the subjects of their dissertations.

Because statistics relies heavily on mathematics, it is likely that a statistics dissertation will include a variety of tables and figures throughout the text. Because these tables and figures are intended to be read with as much attention as the reader is intended to devote to the text itself, the dissertation writer must take care to gracefully integrate these tables and figures into the dissertation text. This means that the writer must introduce, explain, and comment on the tables and figures in such a way that the reader is fully aware of the significance of those tables and figures and what they mean in the context of the dissertation. These tables and figures should be clearly labeled and should be easy to read.

The exact structure and format of a statistics dissertation will depend on the guidelines set forth by a student's department. Typically, universities issue strict criteria that students must follow when preparing dissertations. Students should therefore check with their departments before beginning their dissertations to be aware of the expectations for the final product.
