Term Paper Guidelines

Students that write effective term papers often follow term paper guidelines. There are many different types of term paper guidelines, including guidelines that are provided by a professor as well as guidelines that a student may find on his or her own. Many term paper guidelines are developed based on best practices for writing term papers. Others simple help students to format their term papers effectively.

A term paper guideline provides basic direction for how a student should create and present a term paper. When a term paper guideline influences the development of the term paper, it generally will help students throughout the entire research and writing process. For example, this type of guideline may advise students to research a topic completely before developing an outline for the term paper.

Some simple directional term paper guidelines may include: research before students write a paper, create an outline before creating the first draft of the paper, always edit a term paper before submitting it for a grade, have a clear thesis statement that is supported by new information throughout the term paper, and always stay on topic when writing the term paper.

Another type of term paper guideline would be a formatting guideline. There are two basic types of term paper formats that students might follow: MLA and APA. These formats help to ensure that all students create term papers that are basically visually the same. Of course, the content of the term papers will be unique even if the format is the same.

In both MLA and APA formats, term paper guidelines include: words should be typed in size 12 Times New Roman font, lines should be double spaced, there should be a one-inch margin around the page, page numbers should appear on the top right of each page, and students should include a cover page with their name and the title of the project. There are also many differences between the term paper guidelines for MLA and APA styles.

When it comes to understanding term paper guidelines, students may have to seek additional help from their professors or from writing centers. It also often helps if students are able to submit a draft of the term paper to the professor before the final draft is due so that professors can approve any formatting guidelines.

Term paper guidelines are different than essay guidelines when it comes to the amount and type of content that should be included in the papers. Essays and term papers should always follow the same directional guidelines in terms of researching a topic and providing enough time for redrafts. However, term papers require a different format and writing style than many essays.
