Term Paper Writing

Most students find term paper writing challenging. This is normal, as term papers are long and complex texts and often require a significant time and energy investment. However, term paper writing can be considerably less stressful if a student learns a few of the ins and outs of term papers and their conventions.

First, it is important to distinguish between term paper writing and other types of writing. A term paper is a unique assignment because it asks the student to synthesize what he or she has learned throughout the course of a term of study and also to apply that knowledge to the interpretation of ideas and research. Thus, term paper writing is somewhat different from standard research paper writing. Whereas in a research paper a student typically reports and comments on the work of others exclusively, in a term paper, the student should be an active voice in the discussion, meaning the student should not only comment on and interpret others' ideas, but also put forward ideas of his or her own.

Second, students must become familiar with the standard tone of term paper writing. Term papers will typically be written in formal academic language. Furthermore, term papers are typically written from a perspective of authority. The student should adopt a persona of authority regarding her subject, meaning she should display her in-depth knowledge about the entire spectrum of the topic and its implications and significance.

Third, students must properly document term papers. Most term papers will include a significant research component. Every quotation, paraphrase, or idea that is not the student's own must be marked with a citation that indicates from where the information came. The citation style for the term paper will typically be determined by the student's professor.

Fourth, term paper writing must be clear. Because term papers are long and often complex texts, it is common for students to become muddled in their own thinking, repeat themselves, or present information in a hard-to-follow manner. One of the best ways to remedy this common pitfall of term paper writing is to have people who are unfamiliar with the topic of the term paper read the draft. Having a casual reader read the draft will often alert the writer to places in the text that are unclear.

Fifth, term paper writing must be professional. This means that the paper should be formatted properly, grammatically correct, and cleanly presented.

If a student can follow these five guidelines successfully, their term papers will be polished, clear, and well-written.
