Thesis Paper

A thesis paper is a formal academic document that students write in order to conclude semester or academic programs. The term "thesis paper" often refers to the final paper that a student will write before graduating from a masters program. However, the term can also refer to lesser papers that students write throughout the course of a graduate or undergraduate semester. Regardless of the purpose of the document, all thesis papers should follow similar formats and include similar types of information.

The basic and most popular format for a thesis paper follows an inverted pyramid structure. An inverted pyramid structure requires that students include broad information about a topic in the beginning of the thesis paper. The point of the pyramid is the conclusion, which should be located at the end of the thesis paper.

Each paragraph within thesis papers should also be written with the inverted pyramid structure. Broad information about a particular topic should appear at the beginning of a paragraph. The conclusion to that information should appear at the end of a paragraph. Each paragraph within a thesis paper should introduce new information, with the exception of the conclusion. The conclusion recaps information that has been shared throughout the thesis paper and summarizes it by drawing a specific conclusion.

Thesis papers should always begin with an introduction. The introduction is usually one paragraph that provides background information about the paper along with a brief statement about why the paper is relevant. All introductory paragraphs should also include a thesis statement, which is a one sentence statement that clearly defines the purpose of the paper. Many thesis statements follow an "if, then" format in which a student will state that if something happens in one way, then something else will happen in response.

After the introduction, research papers should have body paragraphs. Again, each body paragraph should introduce new information and be formatted like an inverted pyramid. A thesis paper that concludes a graduate program may have more body paragraphs than a thesis paper than concludes a semester-long course. However, the body paragraphs are the sections of the paper that include the important information about which the student has written the paper.

The conclusion of the paper is always located at the tip of the inverted pyramid. Students should not introduce new information in the conclusion. Instead, they should draw their own conclusions about the information that they shared in the body of the paper. It is important to be aware that most thesis papers should be written in third person. Therefore, even if a student is drawing conclusions, the student should still state his or her conclusions in third person.

A thesis paper is different than a dissertation. The terms are often used synonymously, especially in reference to the final paper that a student must write for a graduate or doctoral program. However, it is commonly understood that a thesis paper is either the final paper that a student writes for a graduate degree or that a thesis is a paper that a student writes in association with an undergraduate or graduate course.

Some institutions refer to the final paper that a student writes for a graduate degree program as a dissertation. However, in the strictest sense of the term, a dissertation is only a paper that a student writes for a doctoral program. When a student writes a dissertation, the student will only write one dissertation over the course of his or her lifetime (unless he or she pursues multiple PhD. degrees). Therefore, a student will never write a dissertation for an undergraduate course or as part of a semester-long course. Dissertations are much more research and writing intensive than most thesis papers.
