Thesis Project
A thesis project is a common project for students in all levels of academic study in which students study a particular subject in depth and write about it. However, thesis projects might mean different things depending on the level of study. For example, a junior thesis for high school students is very different than a graduate school thesis project.
A junior thesis project is a long body of work that a high school junior will create over the course of a year or semester. In order to create the thesis, the student will research a particular subject in depth.
If a student needs to write an undergraduate thesis, the student will generally only write one thesis per course, per semester. The thesis project will require a great deal of work and may be synonymous with a term paper.
A thesis project for a graduate school program is a project that students work on as a culminating project for the entire program. Students will usually only have to write one thesis for the graduate program. A graduate thesis project might also be called a dissertation.
Regardless of the level of academic study, thesis projects should always follow the same writing format. Thesis projects should begin with an introductory paragraph in which a student gives background into the subject of the thesis. The introduction should also contain a thesis statement, which is usually a one-sentence statement that the student will prove to be true throughout the course of the thesis. The thesis statement basically states the purpose of the thesis project.
The body of the thesis contains paragraphs filled with new information that supports the thesis statement. Each paragraph should begin with broad information about what will be contained in the paragraph and have a final statement that ties together all of the information in the paragraph.
The final section of a thesis project is the conclusion. The conclusion is usually one or two paragraphs that contain a student's own conclusions about the work that he or she performed while writing the thesis. The conclusion paragraph ties together all of the ideas that the student expressed in the thesis in order to make that information make sense and have a purpose.
Thesis projects are different than term paper projects in many cases. A term paper project could be a thesis, though. Term papers are generally large academic projects that require a student to perform a large amount of research throughout the course of a semester. Students will only write one term paper per course.
A thesis project also requires students to perform a large amount of work throughout a semester or program. However, the thesis project is distinct because students will usually only write one thesis for a program, in most cases. For example, high school juniors will only write one thesis, no matter how many classes they are taking. They could also write term papers for their classes in addition to the thesis. Therefore, while thesis projects and term papers may be synonymous in some cases (such as in an undergraduate course), they are not always the same.
