Thesis Proposal

A thesis proposal is a brief document that outlines a student's preliminary thesis statement. Thesis proposals are typically submitted to a student's instructor for approval and feedback before a student undertakes an essay or reference project. Thesis proposals are different from most types of academic writing because they are often not fully-developed texts. They merely present a preliminary thesis statement and general description of how that thesis statement is going to be discussed, defended, and explored throughout the student's proposed text.
A thesis proposal is short, but it is not necessarily an easy document to write. This is because theses require thoughtful consideration, several phases of revision, and perhaps even some research. The thesis proposal itself will likely be only one or two pages, but the work behind those one or two pages is quite difficult. This is the point of the thesis proposal assignment: the thesis is often the most difficult aspect of writing any text because it requires the writer to select a narrowly defined topic and then develop an interesting, insightful, and original opinion on that topic. Instructors often require learners to submit thesis proposals in order to assist them in the development of a good thesis because a good thesis often leads to a good paper.
The first step of writing a thesis proposal is deciding on a topic. The topic is the subject the report or paper will explore. Students should select a topic that is interesting or exciting to them, and about which they have an opinion.
After determining the topic, learners should critically consider what they wish to discuss regarding that topic and phrase it in a clear, specific way that presents the student's ideas about the topic. An example of such a thesis is "Protecting endangered forests requires the efforts of individuals, community leaders, and government agencies." This thesis asserts an opinion: that "protecting endangered forests requires the efforts" of several different groups. It then identifies those groups.
Once a thesis is determined, writing the report is fairly simple. The student should write a brief paragraph describing his or her interest in the topic and the ways the topic is relevant to the class. This paragraph should end with the presentation of the thesis statement. Following the first paragraph, the student should present one or two paragraphs explaining how he or she will explain, explore, or defend the thesis. This should include specific examples and a brief description of any research sources the student may draw on. The student does not have to write a conclusion in the thesis proposal, as the conclusion will likely not be determined until the student begins the process of writing the document.
