How to Write an Academic Journal
When writing an academic journal essay, the focus of your writing is to share information with a larger community of professionals in the field. Therefore, your information must be relevant to the field and should provide a contribution to the knowledge base within that particular field or discipline. In addition, a journal writing might provide information that helps others within the field make sense of the results they obtained from their experiments.
If you wish to actually have your journal writing appear in an academic journal, it will likely have to be reviewed by other professionals in the field first. A peer review journal generally keeps a small group of professionals on board, all of who read the journal writing and determine whether or not it is appropriate for publication. In many cases, a few revisions will be made to the journal writing before it is actually published.
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to the format for journal writing. In fact, if you wish to have your journal writing published in a professional journal, you will need to read the guidelines provided by the journal in order to make sure you are following the proper format. Nonetheless, there are a few general tips for journal writing that are accepted with most professional journals.
Regardless of the field you are writing about or the journal you are writing for, the first step in journal writing is to organize your information and determine which information you wish to present in the writing. You might want to start off with an outline, though not all people work well in this manner. In fact, you might wish to write a rough draft first in order to help you organize your thoughts and then you can rearrange your thoughts later.
Regardless of the method you use for organizing your paper, arrangement of the paper is critical when it comes to journal writing. This is partially because the typical, academic journal writing is divided into sections and, as such, you need to make sure the right information is contained within each section. Often times, a journal writing has multiple contributors. If this is the case, you need to work with each person that is contributing to the writing in order to make sure all of the desired points are made.
After determining the information you wish to include in your journal writing, you also need to consider the audience of your paper. In most cases, the audience of a journal writing will be your professional peers. Therefore, you should write the journal as though you are speaking to another professional working in your field or is if you are writing to a student that is learning about the field. As such, you should assume that the audience has at least a basic working knowledge of the subject area and you do not need to explain every last detail.
With journal writing, the final draft should be clear and concise. Review the writing for grammatical errors, punctuation errors, and flaws in logic. Once you have done so, you should have a great journal writing to submit for peer review.
