Write an Essay

When a student is given the assignment to write an article, it can sometimes be difficult for the student to know where to begin. After all, essays can encompass many different fields and formats. Some professors require learners to write projects based on their opinions. Other professors require learners to write projects based on research that they have performed.
No matter why a student needs to write an essay as part of an assignment, the student needs to be aware that an assignment follows a specific format. While essays are generally considered to be less formal academic works, the report format is distinct, though it is flexible.
As students begin to write reports, they need to outline the report prior to beginning their work in order to ensure that they can capture the right flow and amount of information. An essay format should look something like an inverted pyramid. All well-formatted reports should have general information at the beginning of the document and a specific conclusion at the end.
Each essay paragraph within the body of the document also needs to look like an inverted pyramid, with general information about what the paragraph will address in the first sentence and the conclusion of that information in the last sentence of the paragraph.
Reports are distinct from other academic documents because they always have a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a one (sometimes two) sentence statement that expresses the reason for the document by briefly telling the reader what the conclusion of the body of work is. A thesis statement, therefore, tells the reader why author wrote the document.
Each paragraph within the document should support the thesis by addressing a different point. For example, if a thesis is, "If an animal has four legs, then it can run faster," each paragraph should express an opinion or research that supports that thesis.
The conclusion needs to contain a wrap-up of information that the author expressed. The author may include opinions in the conclusion as well. However, when learners write essays, they usually need to be objective, unless the article is an opinion article.
A student will write a document in a different manner than a student would write a report, even though both documents can be similar. When learners write essays, they generally are expressing an opinion or sharing information that they have learned. However, when learners write research papers, they are writing articles that are based specifically around a body of research that they performed.
Research papers also require specific pieces of information, such as methodologies, tools used, statistics, and references, which are not always requirements of a report.
