How to Write a Term Paper

Writing a report, which is also referred to as a report, involves a great deal of research and planning.  Therefore, the most important thing you can do when writing a reference report is to give yourself plenty of time to get it done.  If you wait until the last minute and rush through your research, you will likely end up with a poorly researched project that is not well written.

If you are provided a topic on which your term paper is to be written, you will first need to narrow down the subject.  For example, if you are given the subject of "War," you might want to narrow the subject down to just one specific war or even on the effects that one specific war had on a certain group of people.  The more narrowed your topic, the easier it will be for you to pinpoint the information that you need for your paper.  At the same time, make sure the topic is not highly specialized.  Otherwise, there will be very little information available for your paper.

Once you have your topic determined, your next step is to conduct the actual research.  While doing the research, you must take steps to be organized and to keep track of the sources you are utilizing.  One great way to remain organized is to use note cards.  As you conduct your research, write just one piece of information per note card and number the note cards according to category.  For example, if writing about the effects of World War II on Jewish people, all of those cards labeled "1" might be about concentration camps while all of those labeled "2" might be about places where Jewish people hid from the Nazis.

By using note cards to help you stay organized, you can simply put all of those related to one category in a pile together.  You can then rearrange the cards so that all of the information you gathered from various sources is mixed together and helps paint the full picture.  If done correctly, your term paper will almost seem to "write itself" with the note cards.

After arranging all of your note cards into a logical fashion, you will need to find ways to tie all of the pieces of information together into a logical paragraph.  Remember, your first paragraph is your introductory paragraph.  In this paragraph, you will grab the reader's attention while also introducing your thesis, which is the main idea of the entire report.  The following paragraphs, which make up the body, will include the information you have researched.  Each of these paragraphs should serve to support the thesis statement that you wrote in the introductory paragraph.

After you have presented all of the relevant information that you gathered through your research, you will write the conclusion paragraph.  The conclusion paragraph should restate your thesis, though it should be stated in a different way, while also summarizing the body of your report.
