How to Write Thesis Proposal

A thesis proposal is a document that outlines a student's idea for a thesis so that his professor my approve that thesis or suggest alterations to that thesis.  Many college students who do not know how to write thesis proposals assume wrongly that because thesis proposals are brief, they can be composed quickly and without much thought.  This is not the case, as generating the thesis is often the most difficult aspect of composing any text.  Learning how to write thesis proposal texts therefore requires learning how to generate theses.

First, a student should select a general topic of interest on which to write.  The topic is the subject the report or paper will explore.  The topic should be very specific so that the pupil can write about it in a thorough way within the span of the assigned paper.  Therefore, once a student has selected a general topic of interest, he or she should think of sub-categories within that topic and select one of those sub-categories as the topic.

After determining the topic, a student must develop a thesis by stating in a clear way what his or her ideas are about that topic.  Many students who are unsure of how to write thesis proposals struggle because they are not sure of what a thesis is.  A thesis is simply a statement or group of statements that presents the main point of a text in a clear way.  When wondering how to write thesis proposal materials, students sometimes mistakenly believe that their article and thesis proposal must be found by examining external references.  This is not the case.  A thesis is determined by critically analyzing and then determining one's own interpretations or ideas and then presenting them in a clear, assertive way.  

Once a student has learned how to write an argument, the process of learning how to write thesis proposal texts is quite simple.  The student should write a brief paragraph describing his or her interest in the topic and the ways the topic is relevant to the course.  This paragraph should conclude by presenting the thesis statement.  Following the first paragraph, the student should present one or two paragraphs explaining how he or she will explain, explore, or defend the thesis.  This should include specific examples and a brief description of any research sources the student may draw on.  

Students learning how to write thesis proposals should understand that a thesis proposal is intended to be an incomplete document.  The thesis proposal is simply the student's thesis statement with a description of how that thesis statement will be explored in the proposed text.  It is therefore neither a finished document nor an inflexible one.  It is likely that through the course of writing the project itself, the thesis and the points used to explore it will change slightly, and this is expected.
