A master's thesis is the master's-level equivalent of a doctoral reference project. After the committee has been determined and preliminary discussions of the student's topic have been had with the thesis advisor, the student must submit a thesis proposal. Proposals for master's theses are typically lengthy documents outlining a student's planned project in a very detailed way. Many institutions have specific guidelines for the preparation of master's theses proposals. If available, these should be followed exactly. The proposal is then reviewed by the student's department and graduate school before the student is granted permission to proceed with writing the thesis.

Writing a master's thesis requires a significant amount of data collection. Often, the learner will already have completed much of this research before determining his or her thesis topic. However, after firmly deciding upon an exact project, it is best to do a thorough investigation of all extant research on the topic in order to ensure that the student is fully aware of the scope and depth of scholarly research on that topic.
