Writing a Master's Thesis
A master's thesis is the master's-level equivalent of a doctoral dissertation. In other words, a master's thesis is a long, original, and extensive project undertaken as the culminating assignment of a student's master's degree. Writing a master's thesis is similar to writing a doctoral dissertation, but will be shorter and less extensive, and is therefore expected to take a much shorter amount of time.
Writing a master's thesis is not the same as writing a long research paper. This is because a master's thesis is expected to contribute the writer's original insight into his or her topic and field, rather than simply assimilate what other researchers have already said. The master's thesis will in almost all cases require extensive research, but should report on that research as a means of bolstering and elucidating the thesis writer's own ideas.
The first step of writing master's theses is the selection of a thesis committee. This committee is typically comprised of three advanced professors at the student's institution. Two of these professors should be part of the student's department and have specialized knowledge of the student's thesis topic. Among these, one will be the thesis advisor—the primary source of guidance for the student. The other committee member is drawn from outside the student's department and will likely be an auxiliary member.
After the committee has been determined and preliminary discussions of the student's topic have been had with the thesis advisor, the student must submit a thesis proposal. Proposals for master's theses are typically lengthy documents outlining a student's planned project in a very detailed way. Many institutions have specific guidelines for the preparation of master's theses proposals. If available, these should be followed exactly. The proposal is then reviewed by the student's department and graduate school before the student is granted permission to proceed with writing the thesis.
Writing a master's thesis requires a significant amount of research. Often, the student will already have completed much of this research before determining his or her thesis topic. However, after firmly deciding upon an exact project, it is best to do a thorough investigation of all extant research on the topic in order to ensure that the student is fully aware of the scope and depth of scholarly research on that topic.
The writing aspect of writing master's theses will again require a student to follow the explicit directions issued by his or her department and institution. These requirements are often very detailed in order to comply with theses publication guidelines issued by databases that provide copies of theses electronically. One of these requirements is that a student preface his or her thesis with an abstract of the study and its findings.
Writing master's theses is difficult, and should therefore be completed in phases. This means that the student should complete several drafts of his or her thesis and have the thesis committee review and re-review these drafts. This will ensure that the student is not only keeping on task, but also producing the type of work expected by his or her institution.
