PARENTING STYLES: AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT PARENTING STYLES AND COGNITIVE ABILITY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Parenting styles have been the focus of extensive research in the field of educational psychology with different styles of parenting stated in f*****dings to have differential effects on the development of a child. B*****umrind had the initial conception and stated four parenting styles and conducted research in relation to the ***** style effect on a child's development.

This study is important to make an assessment as to which parenting style is ***** most successful ***** suitable for a child *****d in ***** specific c*****text.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this research is to explore the relationship between parenting styles and child development in order ***** discover which *****ren are develop*****g more successfully and which p*****nting style they are subject to.

***** OF THE PROBLEM

The major problem in this specific area of research in educational psychology is that researchers have *****ed almost entirely on adolescents and children who have become almost independent in the exploration of their achievement on academic levels. Because the first six (6) years of a child's life forever determ*****e much of ***** child's pers**********lity, beliefs, principles and goals it is cr*****ically important to look at the various parenting ***** ***** ultimately the environment in which the children are being reared. The primary challenge in this research proposal is concerning the conceptual b*****is of parenting styles, which has always presented a ***** in regards ***** research in ***** ***** of study.

METHODOLOGY

Parenting Style' is defined as "a complex activity ***** includes many specific behaviors that work individually and together to influence child outcomes."

***** construct ***** parenting style, based on Baumrind's concept of parenting *****, ***** used ***** "capture normal variations in parent's attempts to control and socialize their *****ren (Baumrind, 1991) According to the work of Mccoby & Martin, 1983 "Parenting style captures two primary elements of parenting which are those of: (1) parental responsiveness; and (2) parental demandingness. Responsiveness ***** parental supportiveness which speaks of "the extent to which parents intentionally foster individuality, self-regulation and self-assertion by being attuned, supportive, and acquiescent ***** children's special needs and demands" (Baumrind, *****, p.62) Parental 'demandingness referring to "***** claims parents make on children to become integrated into the family whole, by their maturity *****, supervision, disciplinary efforts and willingness to confront the child who disobeys" (Baumrind, 1991, pp. 61-62; as cited by Darling (1999).

In the Parenting Styles online magazine publication, it is stated "Psychologist John Gottman, ***** identified four basic parenting styles in his research on families ***** the emotional climate of ***** home."
