PARENTING STYLES: AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT PARENTING ***** AND COGNITIVE ABILITY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Parenting styles have been the focus of extensive research in the field of educational psychology with different styles of parent*****g stated in f*****dings to have differential effects on the development of a child. Baumrind had the initial c*****ception and stated four parenting ***** and conducted research in relation to the ***** style effect on a child's development.

The primary challenge in this research proposal is concerning the conceptual b*****is of parenting styles, which has always presented a problem in regards ***** research in ***** field ***** study.

The proposed methodology of this study is that ***** a qualitative method of research through review of available peer-reviewed literature in this field of study.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Parenting Style' is defined as "a complex activity that includes many specific behaviors that work individually and together to influence child outcomes."

The construct of parenting style, b*****ed on Baumrind's c*****cept ***** parenting *****, is used ***** "capture normal variations in parent's attempts to control and socialize their children (Baumr*****d, 1991) According to the ***** of Mccoby & Martin, 1983 "Parenting style captures two primary elements of parenting which are those *****: (1) parental responsiveness; and (2) parental demandingness. Responsiveness ***** parental supportiveness ***** speaks of "the extent to which parents intentionally foster individuality, self-regulation and self-assertion by being attuned, supportive, and acquiescent to ********** special needs and demands" (Baumrind, *****, p.62) Parental 'demandingness referring to "***** claims ***** make on children to become integrated in***** the family whole, by their maturity *****, supervision, disciplinary efforts and willingness to confront the child who disobeys" (Baumrind, *****991, pp. 61-62; as cited by Darling (1999).

In the Parenting Styles online magazine publication, it is stated "Psychologist John Gottman, h***** identified four basic parenting ***** in *****is research on families and the emotional climate of the home."
