Journey Into the Deaf-World Term Paper

… The reason seems to be that the use of sign language early in their life enriches not only their ability to process language but also their understanding and knowledge about the world around them from an early age, because their parents can communicate with them.

The people of the Deaf-World recognize that their own culture is rich and vibrant with meaning. They recognize sign language, specifically ASL, as the fabric binding them together. They also know, both from personal experience and from looking at the research, that sign language from an early age will give their children their best chance to learn well and to be successful educationally. Rather than having the educational system try to force their deaf children to function as if they were not deaf, the great majority of the Deaf-World want to be accepted as they are. Personal Strengths Office Skills Term Paper


While I have several weaknesses, there are some that I consider more important to overcome.

Firstly, I find procrastination to be a big problem. I recognize that procrastinating over a task or a problem only makes it worse as I think about it constantly, where I could have solved it and moved on. Procrastination also means I leave things until the last minute, and this causes me stress. I believe this is something I must address.

Secondly, having just returned to studying, I think it is important that I improve my writing skills so that I can get the most out of my studies.

Thirdly, I think I have good potential as a group person but recognize that I can be seen as aggressive. This makes it more difficult for me to fit into a group. I feel that it is important that I overcome this problem so that I can make the most of my leadership and organizational skills in group work. I also see in my studies and my work life that group work is more and more common. This is another reason I feel this is an important weakness to overcome.



The results of procrastination include "increased anxiety, wasted time, poor performance, missed opportunities, guilt, excusing ourselves and avoiding people who depend on us" (Life Esteem). I recognize that all these negative results apply to me. My plan to overcome procrastination is just to remind myself that I am not making things better by delaying them and to be aware that I am procrastinating. I intend to avoid putting things off by constantly focusing on taking action.

Writing Skills believe my writing skills will improve as I continue to study, but that I must also make an effort to improve them. Firstly, I will seek help from teachers where it is available and also take note of any feedback on written work I complete. I also intend to seek help by reading guides on subjects such as report writing and essay writing. While my writing skills are a barrier, they are mainly a product of having less experience in these areas than others, and I am sure they will improve with practice.

People Skills

The final problem is my tendency to be seen as aggressive when working in group situations. To overcome this, I need to focus on how people perceive me in group situations. At times my need to lead and to be independent can make me uncomfortable and I believe it is this that makes me appear aggressive. My mission has always been to make a difference in the world and to help others, but until recently I had no idea how I would go about achieving this lofty goal. Considering the requirements that they may be looking for prior to the interview may also help with the framing of answers.

For the interview itself the candidate should ensure they are in a suitable location, away from noises or other interruptions. Interruption may distract the interviewee and could make them appear unprofessional if they are unable to manage a telephone call effectively. During the interview the interviewee should listen careful to what is being aid, and remember to respond appropriately with their voice, as the interviewer cannot see body language of visual cues, so nodding a head is not going to be seen. The answers given should be accurate, honest, and succinct. However, if the interviewer asks a question that the candidate needs to think about, they should not just jump in with an answer; instead they should think about it, but without the body language cues, they should tell the interviewer they are just thinking about it so there are no awkward silences.

Following this advice may not guarantee a successful telephone interview, but if the advice is followed it will help to increase the chances for success.

… There were several more effective practices observed in the interview between Linda and Laura in the second interview. Linda informed Laura what the subject of the interview would be and how precisely how the information in the interview would be used in an ethically-acceptable manner. However, in this interview Linda was rather abrupt: she attempted to get straight to the 'meat' of the interview without 'warming up' Laura with more directive, easier questions, such as asking Laura about her background. Laura clearly felt 'put on the spot' about having to talk about how different attitudes in the classroom enhanced or de-enhanced learning. Linda could have asked Laura to talk a little bit about herself without immediately 'pouncing' on Laura with a highly conceptual question about workplace morale. However, despite the open-ended nature of most of the questions, Linda did use effective paraphrasing of what Laura had said in the second interview and was able to direct Laura's focus back to critical points when Laura's attention began to wander. Ultimately, Laura was far more open and forthcoming in the second interview.

Linda's demeanor in the second interview was more confident and effective than in the first. However, in both interviews she could have set up the context and purpose of the interview better. The half-hour allotted to the interview seemed insufficient and getting to know her subject better and speaking more about the purpose of her research might have made the interview more fruitful. Linda could have arranged a better time for Laura, to allow for more discussion and debate if warranted. … However, rather than the hallmark of good listening being to listen even though you think someone is boring or stupid, it is better to reserve such opinions altogether, at least until the end of the conversation. If you are thinking: "I am trying to listen to this person, even though he/she is boring," the chances are that you are not truly listening to him or her. You may be retaining the words but are so resistant to what is being said that your listening capacity has been shut down.

Although I do take notes in class, I slightly disagree with the prompt that good note-taking always goes hand-in-hand with good listening. It is possible to be so obsessed with taking notes that you do not hear what the speaker is actually articulating. Taking the quiz underlined to me what I consider most effective in my listening habits but also demonstrated that there is a profound difference between merely 'hearing' someone else's words and truly listening to them

I am pleased to report that two of my closest friends think I am a good, empathetic listener. One of my friends said I had been very supportive of her and willing to listen to her during a difficult period of her life after she broke up with her boyfriend. She said something that was not really addressed in the quiz: she noted how grateful she was that I was willing to listen to her talk about him over and over again, without trying to silence her like some of her friends. She said just listening, without commenting or complaining or trying to change the subject was very valuable for her recovery and she appreciated letting me get her feelings off of her chest. This demonstrated to me how listening can be a healing experience.

Another of my friends said I am a good listener because I am very good at taking directions and have a good memory for what is said. To be able to remember and learn requires strong listening skills. I think that wanting to hear what other people have to say, being genuinely interested in them, and desiring to learn more are all components of an effective listening style and help me with many facets of daily life. Listening is not synonymous with intelligence, but it can be a very valuable tool in learning.

Participants will primarily be it professional and operational department figures that have had experience with insider threats in the past based on their implementation of cloud computing within the firms' it structure. This design stems from the research tradition of phenomenology, which is commonly used in qualitative research. This research tradition focuses on elaborating and extrapolating certain themes from within the participant perceptions in order to find commonalities among the participants that would help lead to stronger assumptions regarding the nature of the research question. Under the assumptions of phenomenology, the research design will focus on semi-structured interviews. Thus, there will be particular questions or the written out, along with potential questions to be asked in instances of certain digressions from the topic. This will allow the researchers to adapt to any potential digressions that occur without failing stay focused on the topic at hand. Yet, the interview questions will be open ended. This allows for a certain amount of spontaneous answers on behalf of the participant which is important to be able to allow the participant's perceptions drive the nature of the data collection. Open ended questions are important for the researchers' notes to be able to help pull out common themes and categories cross different interviews. Moreover, these open-ended questions may be able to help adjust future interviews based on the answers of certain participants. The three best pieces of advice about handling conflict were: (1) the manner in which we communicate with other in times of anger can make the difference between successful conflict resolution and violence; (2) it is important to recognize and avoid the potential "trigger points" of others in times of conflict or anger; and (3) we have a certain measure of control over the way we express frustration or anger and over the way we choose to communicate in productive and unproductive ways in different situations.

Most situations of conflict offer substantial opportunity to help minimize frustration and to resolve the conflict successfully or, in the alternative, to worsen the frustration and anger of the other people involved. The way we communicate plays a tremendous role in whether we help resolve situations or contribute to making them worse. Blodgett, Paul C. 1997. "Six ways to be a better listener." Training & Development, July: v51 n7 p11(2).

In this article, the author lists six specific things people can do to be more effective listening. He points out the benefits of listening well, which will pay off both personally and professionally. The six strategies he recommends are:

Encourage the listener by letting them complete their thoughts and encouraging them to elaborate.

Pay attention to personal body language and look like an active listener.

Concentrate on what that person is saying, and not what you will say next.

Listen from the speaker's point-of-view without judgments

Consider what the speaker is saying from his or her perspective, frame of mind and emotions

Give feedback. Clarify, restate, reflect the content, without inserting your own comments, asking for clarification if you need it.

Day 5 Went back to my old work areas today. I realize now that as busy as my life is, I cannot finish my work all before I go to school nor do I have the desire to go to the library and make a geographical cure. This time I decided to tell people that I would like to talk to them but I did not have the time and would try to get back with them tomorrow. How funny, no one came up to speak with me today, I think that everyone is feeling the time crunch and are trying to get things done as I am.

Day 6 Worked at home most of the day, trying to get ahead so the work issue could be removed from the factor of the problem I have with listening. Didn't really see anyone so didn't really get a chance to practice my theories.

Day 7 Got to practice when I was interrupted by a telephone call today. I was working at the computer when a friend called. I wanted to talk to him, but at the same time I was doing some good work and wanted to try to keep on target. I found that I was incapable of interrupting his conversation. I kept working on the computer while he was talking, with the phone cradled between my ear and my shoulder. Once he actually asked me if I was typing while he was talking. It took me aback, and I denied it but I think we both knew it was a lie. I was falling back into not listening. I realize that not being able to tell him was probably worse than not listening.

Day 8 A weekend of good work and relative isolation leaves me ready to come to class and interact with my peers. No really good chances to get into conversation, but I find that when I am listening, I am thinking so much about being an active listener and a participant in the conversation that it is making as much problem as when I was only half listening. There are many obstacles that could get in the way of effective listening. Johnson (1996) relates some of these blocks. These include:

Rehearsing" - the listener spends more time preparing what he is going to say next. Although he may look like he is paying attention, his mind is racing ahead rehearsing what he wants to say.

Identifying"- sometimes the speaker may something that triggers the listener's own experience or similar thoughts and opinions. The listener then goes into his own story.

Advising"- some people think of themselves as great advisers. They tend to jump very quickly to giving the right advice after only hearing the beginning of the conversation. They therefore miss most of what is said subsequently.

Sparring"- the listener spends most of the time arguing, debating and finding things to disagree with.

Derailing"- when a listener becomes uncomfortable or bored with the topic he attempts to change the topic.

Placating"- agreeing with everything so that you may be liked.

It is obvious from this list that effective listening is not a natural or easy process and it does take concentration and effort to be effective. It is even suggested that if you are tired at the end of a listening session then you may not have been doing it effectively enough. Poor listening can have serious negative effects in every sphere. It can lead to misunderstanding in most job situations. Miscommunication of instructions can cause missed deadlines, loss of business etc. In the academic environment poor listening can affect the students when they mis-interpret lecture information; it can affect the interactions between the faculty and the students. Ineffective listening also runs the risk of hurt feelings and perceived lack of worth of staff members. Hasty judgments sometimes result from poor listening. It is a good idea that at meetings, conferences, lectures etc., to jot down the main ideas so that the mind is not preoccupied with remembering these and so it does not interfere with the listening and understanding. Developing a rich vocabulary will also improve the listening skills. Good listening takes awareness. You need to be aware of when your listening is not as effective as it should be and what problems it is causing. Then be willing to listen to others as they help you to do better.

Effective listening has many advantages both personally and professionally.

As Petress (1999) puts it..."good listeners stand out in a crowd; they are cherished by employees, teachers, friends and others since they aid speakers to make their points and convey meaning efficiently. Good listeners have advantages; they get promotions, they are more frequently selected for power/prestige positions and they are better informed.
