First, plagiarized material may stand out because of a noticeable change of context within the text. For example, Ryan remembers one student who was supposed to write about security policies in Korea but part of the material was about Massachusetts law. That the student failed even to go over the material he or she was copying proves that plagiarism is largely due to laziness.

Another key way of detecting cheaters is by their lack or misuse of footnotes. An instructor can easily tell when certain facts or phrases should be properly attributed to a source, and if a student fails to provide that information it may be a sign that he or she has simply copied the material and is passing it off as original text. Again, rather than simply paraphrase or quote the material and properly cite it, the lazy student resorts to plagiarism.

Finally, Ryan notes that false references, or references to fake books or articles, is a common way for students to cheat but one that can be easily detected by doing simple online searches. Moreover, instructors can also query the search engines of private institutions or online libraries to find the source material from which students copied.

Consequences for being caught depend on the situation and the policy of a professor or an institution, but usually range from failing that particular assignment to being expelled from school. However, Ryan notes that in addition to the direct consequences to the plagiarist, cheating adversely affects the entire student body and the institution as a whole. Cheating is unfair to students to do their own work, as it undermines their genuine efforts to succeed scholastically.
