The core values identified in the Ethical Lens Inventory were sensibility and autonomy and the classical virtues were moderation and self-restraint. Although each ELI element was scored in the “mild” range, this combination of core values and classical virtues means that a higher priority is placed on selecting life goals and the optimal career path to achieve them, but these plans can be influenced and changed by others along the way.

a. Discuss how these core values and classical virtue(s) compare to the top five values from the Clarifying Your Values exercise, found in the course of study. The top five values identified in the Clarifying Your Values exercise were as follows:

1. Customer Satisfaction;

2. Action orientations;

3. Order;

4. Initiative; and,

5. Helpfulness.

A comparison of the these values with the core values and classical virtues in the ELI would depend on how these top five values were operationalized but there are some identifiable connections and relationships, including the tendency of individuals rated MSMA to seek compromise solutions that satisfy as many people as possible and the desire to proceed in a methodical fashion that avoids disappointments and the unexpected.

4. Discuss how you plan to use the ethical lenses to approach ethical situations throughout your professional life.

Completing the ELI was analogous to the wicked queen in Snow White asking the magic mirror, “Who’s the fairest?” and learning that she was not quite as fair as she thought in every way. In particular, the several blind spots identified in the ELI (besides the one discussed above) made it clear that I have become accustomed to assuming that other people – including my co-workers and supervisors -- shared my views and opinions because, of course, from my perspective, these views and opinions are absolutely correct. In addition (and even though I have not realized it in the past), the ELI indicates that I may be too persuadable when confronted with conflicting views.

The general guidance and checklist presented in the ELI concerning how to apply the critical lens in the future provide a useful framework in which to integrate these findings into real-world personal, social and workplace situations, especially those that require a “getting to yes” approach. In some cases, legitimate conflict should not be avoided but rather encouraged in order to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to share their views. In other words, organizational discord does not always mean failure but it always represents an opportunity. In addition, the ELI indicates a need for looking beyond my own short-term personal goals and motivations to determine how to create the greatest good for the greatest number over the long term. Finally, the ELI also emphasized the need for me to shed the rose-colored glasses in favor of an informed ethical lens that does not rationalize unethical behaviors or practices by others in the workplace.

Conversely, the several strengths identified in the ELI can be applied in meaningful ways in the future as well. For example, the ethical path identified in the ELI was the “path of the hero” which means I “sincerely pursue my own goals and strive to work with others to break down barriers and find the good life” (p. 2). Likewise, the classical of temperance facilitates moderation and motivates people to become good members of their communities.
