Animal Testing: Pros and Cons Essay

Because animals used for testing and research are in a lab and not their natural habitat they are under a great deal of stress which can thus affect the accuracy of tests (Aldhous, Coghlan and Copley). Many drugs being tested on animals react differently when a body is under stress.

The major pro-for animal testing is that it aids researchers in finding drugs and treatments to improve health and medicine. Many medical treatments have been made possible by animal testing, including cancer and HIV drugs, insulin, antibiotics, vaccines and many more (Dixon). It is for this reason that animal testing is considered vital for improving human health and it is also why the scientific community and many members of the public support its use. In fact, there are also individuals who are against animal testing for cosmetics but still support animal testing for medicine and the development of new drugs for disease.

Another important aspect to note is that animal testing helps to ensure the safety of drugs and many other substances humans use or are exposed to regularly (Richards). Drugs in particular can carry significant dangers with their use but animal testing allows researchers to initially gauge the safety of drugs prior to commencing trials on humans. This means that human harm is reduced and human lives are saved - not simply from avoidance of the dangers of drugs but because the drugs themselves save lives as well as improve the quality of human life.Buy full Download Microsoft Word File paper

Scientists typically use animals for testing purposes because they are considered similar to humans. As such, researchers do recognize the limitations and differences but the testing is done on animals because they are thought to be the closest match and best one with regards to applying this data to humans.

Essay on Animal Testing: Pros and Cons Assignment

Those who argue for animal testing point out all the amazing breakthroughs that have already come from animal testing research such as organ transplant and open-heart surgery techniques; life saving drugs; effective insulin and cancer treatments; and vaccines for deadly diseases like polio, rabies, rubella, and tuberculosis (Dixon). Animal testing also benefits the lives of animals such as the heartworm medicine that has saved many dogs lives.

Many regulations and laws are put into place to insure that animals are treated as humanly as possible. Animal abuse is rare in animal testing facilities. Researchers are looking for the best possible solutions to medical problems.

Animal testing is the most accurate way to learn the effects of substances in a living body (Dixon). Using cell cultures can only reveal side effects on a molecular level and cannot unfortunately, reveal side effects like organ failure, rashes, tumors, or cardiac arrest like animal testing can. Using computer models cannot always predict unknown variables that can be discovered with animal testing. Animals may not have the exact same philology as humans but animal testing is accurate enough to test whether a substance is even safe enough for human trials.
