Measurements to Assess Individuals for Corporate Banking

Assessing someone for corporate banking can be done in several ways. Among the ways to do that are through the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and through the Five Factors Model of personality.

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator is a personality test. Through a series of questions, the test looks for commonalities and can provide a person with a good assessment of his or her personality type (Matthews, Deary, & Whiteman, 2003). It looks at how people make decisions about various things, but it also considers how people see the world (Matthews, Deary, & Whiteman, 2003). By addressing both of those issues it is much easier to see whether a person would be well suited to the job of corporate banking. There are 93 questions on the test, and they are considered forced-choice (Matthews, Deary, & Whiteman, 2003). This means the person taking the test has a choice, but only between specific answers offered by the test creators. If a person does not feel he or she is able to choose at all, the question may be skipped. Most of the questions provide choices that are not complete opposites of one another but that are preferences that are similar in dichotomy. There are few legal or ethical issues with the test, although it is not always a good predictor of a person's ability to perform a particular job (Matthews, Deary, & Whiteman, 2003).

The Five Factor Model looks at the five main traits that make up personality and considers how to distinguish between them without any overlap (Hunsley, Lee, & Wood, 2004). There is a concern that this really is not possible, and that the test is not reliable because of that. The five traits used for the test are extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness (Hunsley, Lee, & Wood, 2004). Most critics believe that everything about a person's personality cannot be explained by the Big Five, and therefore the model is unreliable (Hunsley, Lee, & Wood, 2004). The factor analysis used to score the test also does not have a basis for choosing solutions that is universally recognized, further muddying the waters when it comes to the true validity of the test (Hunsley, Lee, & Wood, 2004).

Overall, there are no tests that are going to completely tell whether a person would be a good fit for corporate banking. Most bankers are Type A personalities and extraverts, because they spend a lot of time work and talking to people. However, they also need to be analytic and focused, traits that can easily belong to introverts. Although there are tests one can take in order to learn about personality and other facets of human behavior, basing a career choice off of a test is not a good predictor of future success. There are, however, internships and related activities in the corporate banking sector for people who want to explore that career path option.
