Battle of the Bulge, also known as the "Battle of the Ardennes" (a region of extensive forests and rolling hill country in Belgium and Luxembourg, stretching into France), also known as the "Watch on the Rhine" (by the Germans) began on December 16, 1944 and lasted until January 25, 1945. The background was this:

Hitler wanted his army to defend Germany. Hitler believed that he could split the Allies parked on the Western front and make the Americans and British plead for a separate peace and remain without the help of the Soviet Union. The battle was scheduled for December, when the Ardennes (a section of steep hills covered with thick forests covering north-eastern Belgium and Luxembourg, but also stretching into France) is often covered by heavy fog and low-lying clouds. He wanted to keep the Allied Air Force off his back while he fought to surround the 422nd and 423rd regiments, which they did during the first three days, also capturing and wounding the 106th Infantry Division.

The battle was fought "dirty," with the Germans attacking and fighting in the worst weather the area had seen in decades, thick snow and fog. The conditions were deadly for both sides. 100,000 Germans were killed, wounded or captured, and 81,000 Americans were casualties.
