¶ … administrative assistant for a division chief in a large holding company that owns several hotels and theme parks. You and the division chief have just come from the CEO's office, where you were informed that the guest complaints related to housekeeping and employee attitude is increasing. Your on-site managers have mentioned some tension among workers, but have not considered it unusual. The CEO and your division chief instruct you to investigate. Suggest at least three different types of research that might be appropriate to the situation.

Three research methods might be appropriate to the situation facing the company. The first research method is quantitative research. Quantitative research focuses on the principle of positivism in the process of determining the underlying issues in relation to the research question. Quantitative research method involves the collection and conversion of data into numerical form to facilitate statistical calculation and allow the firm to draw applicable conclusions. Quantitative research method depends on the functionality of the predicable outcomes or hypotheses. The second research type or approach is qualitative research method. This type of research method would enable the company to focus on social aspects of the problem while addressing the research questions. Qualitative research approach does not operate on pre-determined hypotheses in order to unveil the underlying issues in response to the research question (Cooper & Schindler, 2011).

The qualitative research approach operates on critical evaluation of the research problem to facilitate the development of theoretical frameworks. The third research approach or method is experimentation. The company can decide to manipulate the two variables and observe the outcome of the action. Experimental research is crucial to the functionality of the company because it allows the firm to determine the source of the error effectively and efficiently. Experimental research method would allow the company to develop competitive causal relationship and quantify the outcome of the variables aiming to address the research question. The company might decide to apply the use of action research methods to improve the working conditions within the organization (Hinchey, 2008). Action research represents scientific inquiring into efforts of an organization with the aim of improving the quality services and products in relation to the market or consumers (Cooper & Schindler, 2011).

Use the eight design descriptors in Exhibit 6-3 to profile the research described in the Chapter Snapshots.

Assume you are a manufacturer of small kitchen electrics, like Hamilton Beach/Proctor Silex, and you want to determine if some innovative designs with unusual shapes and colors developed for the European market could be successfully marketed in the U.S. market. What qualitative research would you recommend, and why?

I would recommend case study type of qualitative research method to reveal the reasons behind the research question. This would enable the company to conduct extensive evaluation of the research question. Case Studies are crucial to the demonstration of the value and benefits in relation to usage of products or services. Case studies would help the company to determine how to market successfully the innovative designs in the U.S. market. Case Studies offer extensive opportunity for the company to know the influence of innovative designs on the consumers or the U.S. market. I would also recommend case study because of the in-depth investigation approach thus focusing on the case (U.S. market). The company can learn more information in the process of conducting one case study. This would enable the company to adjust on the available products and services aiming to meet the needs and preferences of consumers in the market or industry. Implementation of case studies reflects bonus opportunities to the company hence maximization of the research approach.

Use Exhibit 7-7 to develop the recruitment screener for the research you described in your answer to question 3.

Recruitment screening involves effective and efficient selection of participants to facilitate the research process of the company. Case Studies require extensive recruitment screening in order to achieve the goals and objectives of the study. The first element of recruitment screener is the development of the heading of the study. In this context, the heading of the case study would be a determination of the success of innovative designs in the U.S. market. The second element of the recruitment screening process is an achievement of the screening requirements. The case study would require that the participants must have sufficient knowledge of the innovative designs. The case study would also require the participants to sign participation form. This would allow the case study to obtain reliable and valid information concerning the success of the innovative designs in the U.S. market. The third aspect of the case study recruitment screening would include the identity information. Participants would include their personal and occupational information in the process of research (Cooper & Schindler, 2011).

The study would also offer precise introduction for participants to have information on their involvement. The study seeks to determine the success of the innovative designs that initial had Europe as the target market. The study will determine the success of the innovative designs in the U.S. market. The case study recruitment screener would consider determining the number of years the participant has been in the U.S. market. This question would address the security approach element of the recruitment screener. Participants would have to declare their gender during the study thus addressing the needs of demographic elements of the recruitment screening. This would happen in the development of male or female options in the recruitment screener. The other element of the recruitment screener would involve the adoption of behavior questions. An example of the behavior question would require participants to disclose their skills and technical knowhow in relation to the innovative designs in the U.S. market. The case study would seek to determine how the participants apply the use of the innovative designs in their lifestyles. The question will address the lifestyle question as an element in the recruitment screener.

Develop the investigative questions that should have guided Sara's observation study of Home Extravaganza.

The investigative question that should guide Sara's observation should aim at answering the characteristics of the study or research question (What?). The researcher should be able to obtain what the respondents think in relation to the research question. For instance, what is home extravaganza in the normal context? This approach would allow the researcher to determine the characteristics of home extravaganza in the process of studying the problem statement. The second directive question should be in response to the requirement of time. The researcher should answer the question when? This would enable the study to determine the appropriate time to answer questions or to conduct research. The researcher would be able to maximize the achievement of reliable and valid responses to the question. The other approach to direct research is determining how to carry out research. The researcher should illustrate on how to conduct or execute the research process. The last approach would be the determination of the specific area or site for the study (Cooper & Schindler, 2011).
