As a strategic venture, B&N decided to push an Android-based book reader beginning in 2009 -- the Nook. This was based on a competitive look at the market, as well as the company's belief that textbooks and other non-pleasure reading material would be going electronic almost exclusively in the next decade. The Nook allows a read in store provision, allowing any customer to browse books for 1 hour while in the store (again, driving customers to the brick and mortar). Nook competes with Kindle almost directly, and in 2012, Microsoft invested $300 million for an 18% share in nook, thus valuing the Nook segment of the business at almost $2 billion (Ovide and Trachtenberg, 2012). Recently, B&N's strategy was to introduce an ultra-competitive 7 and 9-inch tabled called the Nook HD (Pierce, 2012).

Competitive Comparison -- Amazon v. Barnes and Noble -- By 2010, Amazon ended the era of the brick and mortar bookseller. This has resulted in numerous changes; both to the industry, the publishing world, and the way consumers find and choose options. If we think logically about the retailing model in the 21st century, this makes sense -- the key to business profitability is innovation and strategic flexibility. Barnes and Nobel is built, and functions quite well, as large retail chains. B&N cannot change overnight -- they have long-term leases, hundreds of millions of dollars in inventory, and require a great deal of cash just to stay open. Amazon, however, can switch its strategy with almost the touch of a button, and has such a sophisticated set of algorithms that it is almost as if one has a personal shopper at all times (Rosenthal, 2009)Download full Download Microsoft Word File

Recommendations: CanGo should focus on building a brand irrespective of either competitor. Instead, focus on a unique niche while including some of the ease of use algorithms from Amazon. Barnes and Noble is not as big of threat due to the synergies that may be found while addressing Amazon's competitive issues. CanGo, like Amazon, should also consider developing a proprietary product to differentiate itself.
