However, it is first important to acknowledge that in Thailand the key or main language is known as the standard Thai, which is also known as Siamese or central Thai and it is the official language that is used by the over 20 million citizens of Thailand in their day-to-day activities. This therefore means that English is referred to as a foreign language in Thailand.

Students who enroll in these classes have different objectives but it can summarily be stated that they want to learn how to write and speak in English so as to broaden their educational background. Secondly, it could be because they plan to travel to a country that uses English as its official language so as to study, work or visit such countries for leisure. The reasons for learning English by students of other languages will be thoroughly analyzed in the subsequent chapter.

In the subsequent chapter i.e. chapter four, the study will look at English from different perspectives such as the teaching of English from a general point-of-view, the background of the English language and lastly the reasons for learning English as a second or foreign language.

In chapter five this present study will discuss on how the use of computer assisted language learning program (CALL)in EFL classrooms in Thailand applies to the constructivism learning theory and is considered as constructivism in teaching English to student of other language.

Referring to numerous articles, journals and books written by various authors such as Kukusla-Hulme (1988, 163-170) they have all described the language of English as a western-German language that came up from the kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon in England and later the Kingdom of Anglian medieval of Northumbria who made it to spread to as far as the Scotland's south-east side. It was formed from the mix of dialects and languages both from German settlers and Britons in the east coast of Great Britain, the mix of the two languages formed what was to be known as the old English the name being derived from the word Angles, in the early part of the 5th century. The Old English was replaced by the Middle English, which came about as a result of 11th century Norman quest for the Great Britain. During that period the Norman-French language was being heavily applied or borrowed by the old English. The old English spelling and vocabulary changed greatly from the use of some Romance language to what was referred to as the Middle English. The modern English as it was to be known came about as a result of change in use of vowels, that was influenced by the assimilation of other European languages into the Middle English which happened in the 15th century in England's southern part.

4.1 Teaching English Language (in general)

Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), takes place where English is not being spoken, and tutors generally assume that learners of English as a foreign language speak and understand very well their own mother tongue which is not English.

Opposite of TEFL is TESL which is teaching English as a second language which is mostly done in English speaking countries, for example Australia, the U.S., Britain and Canada, where English is taught to newcomers so as to enable them communicate easily in the new host country. Tutors of English as a second language do not make the same assumption like tutors of EFL make i.e. learners speak and understand well their own mother tongue.

Teaching of English will vary if the learner intends to use it as second language or as foreign language. For those learners who plan to learn English then use it, so as to easily settle in a foreign country they should go to learn the specific dialect that's used in that foreign country. Learners who intend to learn English as a second language and don't intend to settle for long time in a foreign country have a question of which variety of English they should be taught but it depends on the country they intend to visit, for the U.S. they will have to learn the American English, while for UK they will have to learn the British English. Learners who are not travelling abroad learn the variety of English that's in the learning system within their country; for example the Philippines education system teaches learners the American English while the Hong Kong education system teaches learners the British English (Wasik, Bond & Hindman, 2006, pp, 9, 63 -- 74)

Various books and research work have classified types of English depending on why and how they are to be taught, for example teaching English as a business English (BE), English as an additional language (EAL), English for specific purpose (ESP), English for science and technology (EST), English for specific purpose (ESP), English for academic purpose (EAP) among others.

4.2 Reasons for learning English as a Second Language or as a foreign language.

In his book author Pressley & Levin, (1981,17(1), 72 -- 76), noted that English can be referred to as the global or world language because of its wide use, it is also the language that is currently being taught the most, in countries that aren't non-English speaking, unlike other languages like French, Spanish among others.

These could be attributed to the fact that many literature books, articles, journals, magazines and newspapers all around the world are written in English language, computers which are also widely used are programmed in English and most operations use English words and sounds, scientific works and experiments are recorded in English even thou most of them are done by non-English speaking scientist.

Teaching of English as a second language is done to enable the learners to live their day-to-day life comfortably in foreign countries that use the English language, if a foreign student wants to transfer to a school that uses English for communication he or she has to learn English as second language so as to perform well academically, while for an expatriate to get a job in a foreign country that is English speaking he or she will be forced to learn it as a second/foriegn language.

Students who learn English as a foreign language do that as course requirement, to advance their career and be able to get international career opportunities in other foreign countries or to grow their business to new markets that are English speaking (Sternberg, 1987, pp. 89 -- 105).

Other reasons for learning English .For an individual who doesn't speak English and has relations with people outside his native language, he or she will learn English, so as to be able to communicate easily with relatives at the same time appreciate their culture and practices.

For holiday makers or tourist who like to travel around the world it would be important for them to learn the most spoken and popular language which is English. This would enable them to communicate easily with people in the host country, order for food at the hotels and ask for directions from the locals with ease, and thus they would be able to enjoy their precious time at the host country.

For lovers of delicious meals and drinks that comes branded using the English language. Learning the language will assure them that they won't miss out on their brand or recipe because of language barrier.

Others learn English as way of facing the challenge head on, for example Chinese people fear learning English and they would challenge themselves by going to class to be taught English. Linguistics students and teachers would also want to learn English so as to be able to understand it better.

According to Warschauer (2001, 35) in his study, he noted that other people will learn English just to help them understand their own culture and language, he gave an example of the Chinese people whose culture differ greatly with the American culture and they would learn English so as to understand the Americans ways of life.

Learning English will enable the speakers to have diverse option on which language to use when addressing different persons thus it will afford him the flexibility in his or her communication with people from different backgrounds. Many great songs, poems and movies are done in English and for someone who love art and doesn't speak English he or she will strive to learn it so as to have the chance of enjoying the different forms of art that are done using the international language.
