"E-learning" is a broad appreciation for the use of electronic materials to support and reinforce all parts of the educational experience, from being the student to being the instructor and connecting to the world (Koohang et al., 2009:91). Most of us have accepted that e-learning is part of our life. And even young people already engage in it during their free time when more and more of them are active online. Koohang et al. (2009) have used this awareness to outline in some detail an instructional plan that walks people through what it might be like to use online experiences in constructivist ways. They focus, for example, on having students keep journals based on the types of sites and experiences they have on the Internet and then relate them to what it meant for them to go through the process of visiting various sites. In this way, the focus changes yet again from the knowledge that is looked at to the process of interacting with it and how individual students give it meaning.

But what might be most exciting in the field could well be the work of others are starting to do as they look beyond the access that computers provide to their truly creative and design abilities. Holbert et al. (2010) have jumped into this level by noting that while some have seen the value of using computer programing as a good constructivist learning tool, it may be even better to look at what it means to literally be inside the online gaming worlds. In these places, represented by Avatars that students make up to reflect who they are, knowledge acquisition and definition is truly open for all to see. The very fact that such experiences are fast-paced and somewhat unpredictable that character and even object development becomes important in the knowledge development processes (Holbert et al., 2010:3-4). Gaming environments are fully cooperative and collaborative, even when competition is a critical element of the experience. As such, it is hard not to see what the implications might be for instructors who truly want to understand what is happening inside the minds of their students.

There is very little doubt but that e-learning and computerized educational technologies are here to stay. To what degree we are able to capture them for true learning and knowledge acquisition is still uncertain, but what we can already tell is that these tools are indeed good supporters of constructivist ideals that seek to appreciate how students use experience to build knowledge. Progress is beginning to be made in adapting the precepts of this theory in this direction -- not a difficult task at all -- but it still remains incumbent upon teachers, administrators and students alike to figure out what it might actually mean in classrooms that today tend to favor standardized learning. The evidence is clear, however, that some creative ideas are starting to become visible within the universe of virtual possibilities.
