SAMPLE EXCERPT:

[. . .] , 2015). Additional articles note the need for support in all forms for better health outcomes. “To end preventable maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality, every pregnant woman and newborn need skilled care at birth with evidence?based practices delivered in a humane, supportive environment” (Chaturvedi & Raven, 2015, p. 144). Nonpharmacologic methods including support are beneficial during labor (Chaillet et al., 2014). Stress plays a part in rates of caesarean births (Ko, Lin, & Chen, 2014).

Develop Recommendations for Change Based on Evidence

Recommendations are as follow: promote continuous support to woman in labor through family members and nursing staff. Nurses can educate expectant mothers on how to breathe. Family members can provide physical comfort and emotional support. Doctors and other members can provide pain relief.

Action Plan

The steps will begin with scheduling meetings with nurses, doctors, medical assistants, and pharmacists to coordinate a protocol for expectant mothers. This will be a chance to educate people on what is needed. The next steps are to educate and train family members. This will take roughly one month to implement due to training and communicating with various internal members. To assess effectiveness will be based on patient satisfaction and vaginal or cesarean deliveries.

Process, Outcomes Evaluation and Reporting

The desired outcomes are fewer cesarean births and higher patient satisfaction. They will be measured through rates of cesarean and vaginal births plus patient satisfaction. The information will be compiled in a report along with a literature review with similar results.

Identify Next Steps

The first step is to see the success of the plan on a small scale. Then use those results to offer modification of standard of care for expectant mothers during labor. This will only be applied to this area and unit because of the lack of evidence for other areas. To ensure implementation become permanent, reports will be published and potential changes in standard policy will be implemented.

Disseminate Findings

The data collected from the articles I will present in an easy to absorb manner. I will provide members internally with a power point presentation showing the results from the article review including graphs and images. Externally, I will provide people with the results in an article. It will be presented as a qualitative literature review demonstrating the positive effects of continuous support for laboring mothers regarding vaginal births and stress.

Conclusion

Giving birth is difficult. It can be even more difficult when the woman is not receiving the kind of support she needs during labor. Sometimes support can play such a pivotal role that it may determine the outcome of a birth. For example, in recent years, c-sections have risen in number. Perhaps increase support in labor like rubbing the woman’s back, helping with breathing through contractions, and so forth could enable women to relax and give birth naturally. The ACE Star model of discovery, evidence summary, translation, integration, and assessment will provide the basis for a sound plan of action. Continuous support during delivery has been proven to improve vaginal birthrates and can be integrated into a plan of action through communication of prior success and measure its effectiveness as it is carried out.
