Cooperation, Due Process, And Justice

In the course of daily life, everyone will encounter a number of different situations, where they must use ethics to determine the right course of action. As a number of different ethical philosophies have been developed; to help people decide how to react to various issues they face. Yet, with so many different theories, to determine the most accurate requires that you carefully examine three ethical theories. This will be accomplished by reviewing three different pieces of literature on ethics. As an examination of the ethical value, personal opinions about each theory and when they can be applied in the workplace will highlight the significance of each. The three different theories that will be examined include: applied ethics, moral psychology and descriptive ethics. This will highlight how each of the different ethical theories can be used to help everyone determine the most appropriate course of action. It is through carefully examining all three ethical theories in this light; that will provide a greater appreciation as to how ethics influences the decisions that people make everyday.

Applied ethics is when you are examining how various moral outcomes can affect actual problems such as: the ethical views that a person has on abortion will affect how they view the problem could be solved. In the literature Self Enlightenment of Applied Ethics, it talks about how applied ethics has become increasingly popular with many different committees. This is because of the overall viewpoints that the different members will have in shaping outcomes. As each of the different moral views about various issues; will determine what kind of actions various committees may engage. However, beneath the surface this ethical theory presents a problem, where confusion can develop. In this particular situation, the overall ethical views can create confusion, as no idea can be accepted or rejected for alternatives. The way that this is created is: by providing more than one different course of action or the possibility that two actions could be in conflict with one another. Once this takes place, it means that the chances of being able to see effective action in response to what is occurring, diminish. The article then concludes, by talking about how to improve these situations through: better communication and flexibility. This will reduce the overall amounts of actions that could be utilized, helping to provide more clarity. (Chadwick, 2002)

Applied ethics can clearly be used to effectively manage a number of different complex issues that arise. The overall moral views can help to provide diversity, as these views will help shape what course of action can be taken. The article is correct, in that the different morals can create a situation that is similar to gridlock. As each person believes that they are engaging in the most morally correct way, with their support for a particular course of action. While someone else, may have a completely different view and support the opposite course of action. Because neither one of the viewpoints can be readily accepted or discounted; means that gridlock will develop. To break such a stalemate, requires that you have both sides that are willing to work together towards a common solution. When this occurs, applied ethics has proven to be effective at providing an appropriate course of action. However, everyone must have some kind of flexibility from their moral views.

Workplace Application

Applied ethics has a role in workplace, as they have often been used by various committees, board of directors and within work groups. The way that this would impact you as a professional is: your overall moral views could be different from someone else in the group. When you have flexibility towards your moral position; this means that you can more effectively find the best solutions to various problems that are encountered. Over the course of time, the action taken and its results will play a role in determining career advancement. As the outcomes, will be the biggest factor in determining if a particular action was successful. The way that you can apply this type of ethics in the workplace is: by clearly defining objectives. You must then emphasize, that everyone must keep an open mind and use flexibility, with the most important issue of finding the best course of action.

Review of Moral Psychology Empirical Approaches

Moral psychology is: the study of how various morals are formed over the course of a person's life. Under this theory there are three different phases that determine how morals are developed to include: childhood, adolescence and adulthood. In the article Moral Psychology Empirical Approaches, it talks about how the study of moral psychology has become somewhat outdated by critics. Part of the reason for this is a number of different factors to include: issues of compatibility, questions about the overall effect that character will play and the conflict that is taking place between ego vs. altruism. In this particular case, the ideas of early thinkers in moral psychology have been brought into to question; as there are constant influences that shape the overall morals of someone. Where, instead of seeing changes in three stages of life, there could be one continuous stage that will shape how someone's morals are determined. (Doris, 2006)

Personal View

Moral psychology provides an obvious beginning frame work, as to how morals are shaped. In many ways it is generalizing what everyone goes through, by the use of the three stages. This is the biggest drawback of this ethical theory. As a one size fits all approach is taken to understand how morals are shaped and developed. However, the ideas presented provide a basic foundation regardless of what stage you are at in life; because your morals are constantly evolving based upon events. The article is correct, in that everyone is going through an evolving stage in life that will constantly cause us to shape and reevaluate our morals. When you apply this theory to your personal life, it is obvious that is based upon various events that will occur, which will influence our morals and what actions we take. This means that if someone has a particular moral viewpoint, this can be changed over time based upon what happened to them.

Workplace Application

This core value could be used in the work place, to help provide a greater understanding as to how different morals develop in employees. Over the course of time as various events occur, this could mean that employee morals will be influenced based on what is happening. It affects you as a professional by: understanding that changing morals could affect behavior. Where, if a positive or negative event happened this will shape that person's morals. To have the most influence, you must communicate with them the meaning of what happened and how it is affecting them. This will help you to have more of a positive influence on this person in the workplace.

Review of Descriptive Ethics

Descriptive ethics is when you are looking at morals by examining a number of different issues to include: the social aspect, psychological and economic. In the literature Descriptive Ethics, it talks about how this approach is often used by the scientific community in their search for truth. Yet, there are times that various situations occur that make this theory inaccurate such as: when something happens that is outside of the different variables covered. In this particular case, if something happens beyond the scope of all of the different elements, means that an ethical conflict can occur. In society this can create an ethical conflict, when everything that you are taught is turned upside down; because this theory can not address a missing aspect of your life. (Rich, 2004)

Personal Views

Obviously, descriptive ethics does provide a good way to can examine how someone is influenced by different situations. Yet, like all of the other ethical theories presented, this one has: a noticeable weakness and confusion occurs when an area of this ethical theory is not addressed. In this particular case, because descriptive ethics looks at multiple approaches; some people will attempt to use this theory to determine the most appropriate course of action. The problem with taking such an approach is: that you when the time arises that a situation is not covered by this theory, confusion will ensue. As there is no clear, ethical approach, which creates a situation where no action is taken or the wrong decision is made. However, if flexibility was used in this ethical approach, this could provide a workable moral theory that would adapt to various situations that are occurring in someone's life.

Workplace Application

This can be used in the workplace to provide employees with a general guideline for basic ethical principals. Yet, when you apply flexibility to this approach employees have an ethical guideline that can adapt to various situations that occur.
