Participation in CSR activities by banks in Saudi Arabia has been viewed to improve their corporate reputation and hence according this banks easy management of the business and good future prospects as it would be easier to attract new customers. On the other hand banks that participate in CSR activities usually witness increase in stock market valuation and it is also easier for them to access capital.

Huge, (2005, 572) lamented in his study that social responsibility in Saudi Arabian banking industry needs to advance or divert attention to areas such as rehabilitation of divorced Saudi women, anti-obesity campaigns, youth career counseling, road safety rules awareness, supporting of medical research, offering of assistance in times of natural disasters, conservation of the environment, human rights support and food programs for the poor, as these areas have largely been neglected or receive minimum attention by socially responsible banks within the country

Research Proposal on CSR in Saudi Arabian Banking Assignment

The objective of the research just as a recap is to identify social responsibility: attitude actualities and possible area of advancement in Saudi Arabian banking. It is important to note several different research methodologies will be employed throughout the course of this research, consisting primarily of qualitative methods which are based on meanings spoken through words or personal expressions from the respondents. Qualitative analysis of data is one of the major methods for data compilation, interpersonal interviews. Also some quantitative collection and analysis will be conducted in terms of direct money outlays as evidence of social responsibility and possibly in the case of certain psychometric instruments, dependent on the willingness of subjects contacted for inclusion in the research. A sufficient number of subjects must be willing to complete the same instrument in order for results to be valid and meaningful (Breakwell, 2006).

Primary research

The primary means of conducting research with individual subjects will be the use of broad-based and open-ended interviews, which make results somewhat more difficult to collate and categorize yet which allow for the greatest detail and thus the fullest understanding of individual perspectives (Babbie 2009; Hall 2008). Extensive reviews of public records involving contributions of banking institutions to social causes, legislation involving social responsibility in the banking industry, and any possible public statements made by officials in the Saudi Arabian government or in the banking industry in regards to this social responsibility will also be conducted. A literature review will also form a major part of the proposed research, especially as background information to be utilized in the creation of the subject-specific instruments and in the conducting of interviews with subjects that agree to be contacted for this purpose. Analysis of quantitative data will be conducted using standard statistical techniques as appropriate; interview results and other qualitative data will be collated and categorized as definitively as possible yet as broadly as necessary, allowing for the presentation of a comprehensive range of perspectives on the topic (Hall, 2008).

Research methods

There are types of research strategies that can be employed in conducting a research study. These include experiments, case studies, survey, theoretical perspectives, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. It is imperative to examine some of these strategies while paying particular attention to the survey method which will be applied in this particular research.

Survey is an important research strategy that has was popular in conducting this research. Surveys 'allow the collection of a large amount of data from a large population .This implies that the researcher can conduct surveys and question specific groups of people to obtain large amount of information relevant to the subject of the survey. The data is usually collected from the people either via questionnaire or orally. The purpose of the survey was to establish and analyze views of respondents in order to find what they think about social responsibility: attitude actualities and possible area of advancement in Saudi Arabian banking. However, despite the fact that the views from a large number of respondents can be gathered through the survey strategy, the data obtained might not all reflect to the objective of the research at depth (Breakwell, 2006).

Research Procedures

Use of research tools mostly the broad based and open-ended interviews, relevant journals, periodicals and survey would be utilized in the process of conducting this research. Expert's advice might also be needed to conduct the research.

In implementing the activities, both the quantitative and qualitative approaches was considered, where by qualitative data are those that would be based on the spoken words while the quantitative data would be generated from the overall data collected based of accuracy and efficiency.


The practical needs of the research proposed herein are minimal, with no special resources required and a fairly short timeline quite possible. The vast majority, and quite possibly the entirety, of literature-based research -- including a review of government and popular press documents as well as documents from banking institutions that are a matter of public record or otherwise made available -- will be conducted with the use of online databases accessible virtually anywhere. Initial contact of subjects will take place via email, with Internet and/or phone interviews conducted and other instruments completed and transmitted electronically or by fax, all of which will incur negligible expenses. The timeframe for the completion of the data collection phase of this research could be as short as three months, with the literature review already in its preliminary stages and target institutions for subject contact already identified; analysis and presentation will likely require an additional six weeks. This puts the research timeframe under six months total, with expenses hardly noticeable Babbie, 2009).

Possible problems in research

During the carrying out of the research there are several possible challenges that might be encountered included; some respondents might not be willing to cooperate in the process of carrying out of the interview. There is also expected to be a tedious and long procedure that must be followed in order to obtain the entrance to the banks offices which might again be coupled with writing of numerous letters requesting for granting of permission to access the offices and their officials.


The importance of the banking sector in matters of social responsibility has become increasingly clear in recent years from a variety of sources. The global financial crisis is only one example of the ways in which the decisions of the financial and banking worlds have direct impacts on a variety of global social issues. Through this research, the attitude of one country's banking sector towards this social responsibility can be determined and form a nucleus for similar research elsewhere.
